Americans Abroad Midweek Rewind: Horvath, Weah, and more

Sheffield Wednesday suffered a disappointing EFL Cup loss on Tuesday, but Ethan Horvath wasn’t to blame for it.

Horvath made five total saves despite the Owls’ 1-0 home loss to League Two visitors side Grimsby Town. The U.S. men’s national team goalkeeper was one of the few bright spots in the match, keeping Sheffield Wednesday in the tie as long he could. However, Jaze Kabia’s 49th minute goal proved to be the difference as the League Two club pulled a second major upset in the competition.

Horvath, who joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan from Cardiff City earlier in the summer, has quickly jumped into the No. 1 role for the Owls. However, the Owls will need more than Horvath if they want to pull themselves out of their current slide in EFL Championship play.

In Europe, Tim Weah scored for Marseille in a losing effort at Real Madrid. Weston McKennie started for Juventus, as did Malik Tillman for Bayer Leverkusen.

In Denmark, Matthew Hoppe scored in Sonderjyske’s Danish Cup win.
