Reports: Alyssa Thompson nearing move to WSL giants Chelsea

U.S. women’s national team starlet Alyssa Thompson is reportedly on her way to the Women’s Super League.

WSL and international giants Chelsea have agreed to a deal with NWSL side Angel City FC to acquire Thompson in a permanent deal, The Athletic and ESPN reported Thursday. Angel City FC will receive an initial fee of just under $1.3 million, as well as potential add-ons, according to the reports.

Thompson has already signed a five-year contract with the club and agreed personal terms.

A former No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NWSL Draft, Thompson was the first high schooler to be drafted in league history. She was not part of Angel City FC’s recent 2-1 NWSL win over Bay FC on Monday ahead of the reported news that Chelsea were trying to secure a deal for her.

The 20-year-old scored six goals in 16 NWSL appearances this season. A move to Chelsea will connect Thompson with USWNT teammates Catarina Macario and Naomi Girma.

On the international level, Thompson made her USWNT debut back in October 2022 and has since earned 22 caps for her country.

Chelsea completed the domestic treble last season, winning the WSL title, as well as the FA Cup and League Cup. Their quest to complete a historic quadruple ended in the UEFA W Champions League, where they lost in the semifinal round.
