USWNT forward Alyssa Thompson joins WSL giants Chelsea

U.S. women’s national team rising star Alyssa Thompson is on her way to the Women’s Super League.

WSL and international giants Chelsea have acquired Thompson in a permanent deal from NWSL side Angel City FC, both clubs announced Friday. Thompson signed a five-year contract with the club and agreed personal terms.

“Chelsea is such an amazing club, one of the best in the world,” Thompson said. “Being able to play with players that are the best in the world is an amazing opportunity at such a young age and I want to learn, grow and develop a lot. I feel like Chelsea is such an amazing environment to do that in.”

A former No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NWSL Draft, Thompson was the first high schooler to be drafted in league history. She was not part of Angel City FC’s recent 2-1 NWSL win over Bay FC on Monday ahead of the reported news that Chelsea were trying to secure a deal for her.

The 20-year-old scored six goals in 16 NWSL appearances this season. Her move to Chelsea connects Thompson with USWNT teammates Catarina Macario and Naomi Girma.

On the international level, Thompson made her USWNT debut back in October 2022 and has since earned 22 caps for her country.

“We’re delighted to bring Alyssa to the club,” Chelsea’s head of women’s football Paul Green said. “She’s a dynamic winger with electric pace, who can play on either wing and is very good in one-on-one situations.”

Chelsea completed the domestic treble last season, winning the WSL title, as well as the FA Cup and League Cup. Their quest to complete a historic quadruple ended in the UEFA W Champions League, where they lost in the semifinal round.

  1. The tables have turned. The giant clubs of Europe are now have the financial resources to bid on any female player they want. The transfer fee alone is basically the entire payroll for a typical NWSL club.
