Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Weah, Aaronson, and more

Tim Weah finally got to cross his first assist for Marseille off of his list on Saturday night.

Weah assisted once on Saturday night despite Marseille’s 2-1 road loss to Lens in Ligue 1 play. The U.S. men’s national team winger celebrated his first goal contribution in all competitions since September 16.

Marseille had a fast start with Weah teaming up with in-form midfielder Mason Greenwood for the opening goal. Weah faced his way upfield before delivering a low pass to Greenwood for a one-time curling finish into the bottom-right corner.

However, Lens rallied to grab a 2-1 halftime lead that they would take all the final until the final minute. Odsonne Edouard tied the match in the 23rd minute with a penalty kick before a Benjamin Pavard own goal boosted the hosts in front.

Weah played 52 minutes in the match, creating two offensive opportunities, winning two duels, and completing two dribble attempts.

Third-place Marseille will aim to avoid a third-straight loss in all competitions when they host Angers on Wednesday.

In England, Brenden Aaronson scored his first league goal for Leeds United this season. Josh Sargent registered an assist in Norwich City’s road defeat to Swansea City.

In Germany, John Tolkin made his return to Holstein Kiel after a two-week absence through injury. Noahkai Banks and Augsburg suffered a dismal home loss to RB Leipzig. Gio Reyna made his Borussia Moenchengladbach return, but could not help the club avoid a home loss to Bayern Munich.

In Italy, Yunus Musah did not feature for Atalanta. Jonathan Klinsmann registered a two-save clean sheet in Cesena’s Serie B win.

In France, Folarin Balogun and Monaco defeated Mark McKenzie and Toulouse in Ligue 1 play.

Elsewhere, Rokas Pukstas and Hajduk Split picked up three points in Croatian league play. George Bello got the better of Donovan Pines in their head-to-head Austrian league matchup.
