Haji Wright “got what he deserved” in USMNT October window

Haji Wright’s positive return to fitness and form for Coventry City has certainly helped with his U.S. men’s national team aspirations.

Wright scored twice for the USMNT in a 2-1 friendly win over Australia during the October window. The veteran forward got the starting nod from manager Mauricio Pochettino, and did not disappoint at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

After a blistering start to the EFL Championship season, Wright boosted his USMNT stock with his second-career international brace. Fighting alongside Folarin Balogun for minutes in Pochettino’s squad, Wright previously praised club manager Frank Lampard for helping him get back on track after an injury-riddled summer.

Wright’s eight goals have him leading the EFL Championship’s Golden Boot race while the Sky Blues are top of the table as the only unbeaten side left this fall. Despite the 27-year-old not finding the back of the net in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Blackburn Rovers, Wright’s positive October is deserving said Lampard.

“It’s great to see Haji score his goals, two goals that effectively won the match,” Lampard said over the weekend about Wright’s international window. “Sometimes you get what you deserve. He’s been training well, playing well and he goes back into the squad and shows what he can do.

“It’s good to hear, I have worked with him a lot and he is in good spirits,” Lampard added when asked about Wright’s recent comments about Lampard’s trust and confidence in him. “I’m pleased with what he’s got and the goals he scored. It definitely adds to his confidence levels.”

Coventry City will seek a fifth-straight victory on Tuesday when Lampard’s men visit Portsmouth in midweek action.
