Another key member of the U.S. women’s national team’s modern-day roster is hanging up her cleats.
Christen Press announced on “Good Morning America” Wednesday that she will be retiring at the conclusion of the 2025 NWSL season. Press, a 14-year professional player, is set to be honored on Sunday when her club, Angel City FC faces the Portland Thorns in league play.
“I’m retiring from professional soccer, and I’ve decided that this is my last season and my last few games,” Press said in an interview on the ABC show. “I feel a mix of everything. There’s yes, there’s relief, there’s joy, there’s excitement, there’s fear, there’s so much grief. I have so much grief, a part of me, a piece of me, I’m losing her.
“I thought I would wait until I didn’t want to play anymore,” she added. “But I realized that time’s never going to come and I can play, and my body can keep going. And I think it was really important for me to make this decision for myself before that became a different reality.”
A two-time World Cup winner with the USWNT, Press’ 64 international goals are the ninth-most in program history. She last featured for the USWNT in 2021, helping the Americans win the Bronze Medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
Press earned 155 USWNT caps in her eight-year senior international career.
At club level, Press played most of her career in the NWSL, with the Chicago Red Stars, Utah Royals FC, and Angel City FC. She also played for Kopparbergs/Goteborg FC and Tyreso FF in Sweden, as well as England WSL side Manchester United.
During her time at Manchester United, she was a teammate of her now wife, Tobin Heath. Heath announced her retirement earlier in 2025 after earning 181 USWNT caps herself.
