Girma, Thompson, Howell headline USWNT roster for Italy friendlies

Emma Hayes’ final U.S. women’s national team roster of 2025 has been revealed.

Naomi Girma, Alyssa Thompson, and Jaelin Howell headlined Hayes’ 26-player roster for the program’s final two matches of the year. The USWNT will face Italy on November 28 and December 1 in Orlando and Fort Lauderdale, Florida respectively.

A total of 23 players will be named by Hayes for each match.

Girma makes her long-awaited return after recently returning to action for English WSL side Chelsea. She is seeking her first international appearance since July 2.

Girma’s Chelsea teammates Thompson and Catarina Macario have also named to the USWNT roster. Thompson is enjoying a positive run of form abroad, scoring in each of her last two WSL appearances.

Lily Yohannes is joined by fellow Lyon midfielder Lindsey Heaps, as well as Arsenal defender Emily Fox. All six European players have featured in this season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League.

A total of 20 NWSL players were named to the roster, including three players seeking their first USWNT caps. They are Bay FC goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz, Chicago Stars forward Jameese Joseph, and Washington Spirit defender Kate Wiesner. Wiesner was called into USWNT duty in June 2024 during Hayes’ first camp in charge.

Jaelin Howell is seeking her first USWNT cap since April 2022, going 37 months in between international call-ups.

Rose Lavelle and Emily Sonnett are among seven players called into camp that will take part in the upcoming NWSL Championship Final this weekend.

“It’s been an exciting and important year for our group, and we’ve accomplished a lot of goals, expanded the player pool and made strides in our game model, so this camp will be an extension of that, but it will also set the groundwork for 2026, which will be our World Cup qualifying year,” said Hayes.

“Games against top European teams are so valuable as they give us an honest assessment of where we are in our growth as a team, so I know our players with embrace that challenge.”

The USWNT have won 10 of their 15 all-time matchups with Italy.

  1. NO, NO, NO, 1000 times no! Leave Girma in the UK surrounded by bubble wrap! We want her healthy, and it wouldn’t hurt to give a Girma-less back four time to gel in case Girma is unavailable come 2027.
