Pepi, Adams, Reyna headline USMNT roster for November friendlies

The U.S. men’s national team’s final roster of 2025 has been decided.

Ricardo Pepi, Tyler Adams, and Gio Reyna headlined Mauricio Pochettino’s 25-player roster for this month’s upcoming friendlies against Paraguay and Uruguay.

Defender Joe Scally, forwards Haji Wright and Folarin Balogun, and right back Sergino Dest have also been included in the squad.

Several of the leading stars of the USMNT were not called in such as Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Chris Richards, Yunus Musah, and Tim Weah. Pulisic has only recently returned to club training while Weah was recently diagnosed with a thigh injury.

Star left back Antonee Robinson has also been left out as he continues to fight back from a knee injury. McKennie has remained a key player for Juventus while Musah has struggled for playing time on loan at Atalanta.

Midfielder Malik Tillman is also out of the roster after only recently returning to action for Bayer Leverkusen.

Both Pepi and defender Auston Trusty are receiving their first call-ups since November 2024. Reyna and Scally are back involved for the first time since the CONCACAF Nations League Final Four last March.

“As we continue to develop our squad and build on the culture we have created, this is another great opportunity for the players selected for this roster to prove they deserve to be on the final list for the World Cup,” Pochettino said.

“It’s important that they come into this camp prepared to show their qualities on the field and their commitment to being a good teammate. We will keep working on the competitive details in training and have the opportunity to challenge ourselves against two high quality opponents from South America.”

The USMNT will face Paraguay at Subaru Park in Chester, Pennsylvania on Nov. 15 before closing their two-match window three days later against Uruguay at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.

Here is a closer look at the full USMNT roster:

GOALKEEPERS: Roman Celentano (FC Cincinnati; 0/0), Matt Freese (New York City FC; 11/0), Jonathan Klinsmann (Cesena/ITA; 0/0), Patrick Schulte (Columbus Crew; 3/0)

DEFENDERS: Max Arfsten (Columbus Crew; 14/1), Sergiño Dest (PSV Eindhoven/NED; 35/2), Alex Freeman (Orlando City; 11/0), Mark McKenzie (Toulouse FC/FRA; 24/0), Tim Ream (Charlotte FC; 78/1), Miles Robinson (FC Cincinnati; 37/3), Joe Scally (Borussia Mönchengladbach/GER; 21/0), John Tolkin (Holstein Kiel/GER; 4/0), Auston Trusty (Celtic/SCO; 4/0)

MIDFIELDERS: Tyler Adams (Bournemouth/ENG; 52/2), Sebastian Berhalter (Vancouver Whitecaps/CAN; 7/0), Aidan Morris (Middlesbrough/ENG; 11/0), Gio Reyna (Borussia Mönchengladbach/GER; 32/8), Cristian Roldan (Seattle Sounders; 41/0), Tanner Tessmann (Olympique Lyon/FRA; 10/0), Sean Zawadzki (Columbus Crew; 1/0)

FORWARDS: Brenden Aaronson (Leeds United/ENG; 54/9), Folarin Balogun (AS Monaco/FRA; 27/7), Diego Luna (Real Salt Lake; 16/3), Ricardo Pepi (PSV Eindhoven/NED; 33/13), Haji Wright (Coventry City/ENG; 19/7)

  1. This line-up begs for the question “WHERE THE FRENCH TOAST IS THE DYNAMIC ATTACK GOING TO COME FROM WITH THIS MIDFIELD OF DM MINDED CM’S”? BRUH…….

    Tyler Adams (Bournemouth/ENG) – DM/RM/RB
Sebastian Berhalter (Vancouver Whitecaps) – CM/DM/RM
    Aidan Morris (Middlesbrough/ENG) – CM/DM
    Gio Reyna (Borussia Mönchengladbach/GER) – @#$%
Cristian Roldan (Seattle Sounders) – CM/ACM/RM
    Tanner Tessmann (Olympique Lyon/FRA) – DM/CM
Sean Zawadzki (Columbus Crew) – CM/DM/CB

Unfortunately, No Pulisic, No Weah reduces the speed on this team DRASTICALLY. Also why does Mauricio Pochettino not want to give some ACTUAL SPEEDY WINGERS a shot in camp? Canada is giving teams ALL SORTS OF PROBLEMS with Jacob Shaffleberg (NASHVILLE/MLS 22.78 mph) and Ali Ahmed (VANCOUVER WHITECAPS/MLS). Would’ve liked to see:

    Cade Cowell (Guadalajara/MX) – LW/CF
**Cade Cowell is known for his speed, having been named the fastest player in Major League Soccer (MLS) in 2022 with a top speed of approximately 22.8 mph**
Emmanuel Sabbi (Vancouver Whitecaps) – LW/CF/RW
Dynamic and killing it right now with the Whitecaps
    Jesus Ferreira (SEATTLE) – CF/SECOND-FORWARD/ACM
**Jesus Ferreira (not a winger but….) has been noted as one of the fastest players in Major League Soccer (MLS), with a reported top sustained speed of 10.119 meters per second (approx. (22.63) mph) in 2022, which placed him as the second-fastest player in the league at that time. His speed is a key part of his game, especially when transitioning from deep-lying play to a forward position, earning him the nickname “Cheetah”.**

I hope people are not expecting a dynamic team out there from this USMNT group …..especially against fast paced and dynamic teams like Paraguay and Uruguay
    Buckle-up!!!

    • Cade Cowell who last scored in July? The same Cade Cowell that has never had more than 5g in a league season? That’s your “dynamic” improvement?

      Reply
      • speaking of Gio…..what is his average goal a season for……I don’t know….the last 5 years? 0.10 goals per game and 0.08 assists per game?? lol

His highest output was during the 2020-2021 season, where he had seven goals and eight assists in 46 games…….and he’s called into camp. So Cade and Jesus can be called in too.

      • Bizzy: Gio can’t run but he can still impact a match standing in one place. Cowell runs really fast and then kicks it into the 35th row. I used to call Cowell “Buff Arriola” but honestly he’s just taller Jonathan Lewis which is even worse in my opinion.
        ———————-
I like Ferreira but he did this to himself by either asking out of January camp or playing so poorly they thought he was out of shape (that was the official story out of shape). His 5g 9a in 48 apps was his worst goal contributions per app since 2020 when he got Covid and when FCD flew unmasked to Orlando and half the team had to quarantine and they missed the MLS is Back tourney. Berhalter had a far better season this year. Roldan playing a deeper role was Seattle’s best player in the CWC against PSG, AMadrid and Botofogo. Ferreira once again faded away against top competition. Diego Luna who was as cold as anyone the 2nd half of the season had one less goal contribution in 16 fewer matches.
        ————————
I’m a little surprised Sabbi didn’t get a look after a great season. Jesus Perez (Poch assistant) was scouting FCDvVan last week and Sabbi wasn’t great so maybe he just didn’t make it.
        ———————
As for Shaffelburg he’s never had more than 4 MLS goals and was not chosen by Marsch as he’s been fairly poor this year for Canada, his red card likely cost them their quarterfinal with Guatemala in GC.

      • “speaking of Gio…..what is his average goal a season for……I don’t know….the last 5 years? 0.10 goals per game and 0.08 assists per game??” How about this in 7 NL Final Four matches he has 7 goal contributions. Over the course of the last 5 years he has a goal contribution every 140 minutes. That’s pretty good considering he doesn’t play GC to beat up on Concacaf minnows. It is concerning he hasn’t scored or assisted in his last 6 appearances for the US, 348 minutes. Cade is a goal contribution every 210 minutes (but both came in 45 minutes against Trinidad in 2023 GC).
        ———-
        If you want club proof
6194/34=182 Gio goal contribution every 182 minutes
8893/38=234 Cade goal contribution every 234 minutes
Not even taking into account Cade plays in Liga Mx and MLS not EPL and Bundesliga. I mean Cade left SJ because he got benched for Matthew Hoppe (who 7g this year for Sonderjyske, 3 against amateurs in a cup game though).

      • Gio can’t run but he can still impact a match standing in one place.

Johnnyrazor, we don’t need that. We cannot afford that. EVERYBODY NEEDS TO CONTRIBUTE OFFENSIVELY AND DEFENSIVELY ON BOTHS SIDES OF THE PITCH. Gio “floating” around in the middle of the pitch ONLY works against minnows. We are not strong enough for him to OCCASSIONALLY contribute on offense with the hopes that Gio will be involved in a play that gives us a goal (as he doesn’t actually score the goals). Playing a top 10 team with Gio on the field is like the USMNT defending with 10 men.
People have this idea that the USMNT can use Giovanni Reyna to UNLOCK DEFENSES…..Nuri Şahin didn’t think so, Edin Terzić didn’t think so, Rene Maric didn’t think so, Marco Rose didn’t think so, Nuno Espírito Santo battling relegation (Nottingham Forrest) didn’t think so. GB didn’t think so, Pochettino didn’t think so for the past games. He doesn’t have speed, he doesn’t run, he doesn’t have any PHYSICAL / ATHLETIC attributes the team can use, he doesn’t defend, he’s not good in the air, he doesn’t score goals……..like what is he good at (individually), as Dortmund sold him for $4,000,000 to Monchengladbach…….$4,000,000 with add-ons!!!! He’s teammates at Dortmund were Erling Haaland, Jadon Sancho, Jude Bellingham (his good friend who’s young brother took his number at Dortmund)……and he gets cut by Dortmund for pennies and sold for Less than what Colorado paid for Paxton Aaronson? Why? WHERE IS ALL THIS GREATNESS only US fans see??

If Reyna is being given a chance, for doing NOTHING RECENTLY, I see no reason why Cade (speed), Sabbi (speed), and Ferreira (speed, ball control) shouldn’t be considered also.

      • Bizzy: you know what all those managers have in common? None of them even thought about Sabbi, Cowell, or Ferreira. They all gave Gio some starts. Dortmund, Gladbach or Parma had no interest so… it sounds like from his press conference Poch doesn’t see Gio playing much because of his fitness level (recent injury).

      • Johnnyrazor: you know what all those managers have in common? None of them even thought……Gio Reyna could help them win games. It’s simple. (and a slalom dribble through the Mexican B team, that amounted to nothing, didn’t change their minds either).
When it comes to Reyna people only pull up National Team stats (and base off of pure club team numbers, he shouldn’t have been called up any way) because he has been a bench warmer and has nothing to show for in the past 3-4 years.
CURRENTLY Gio has done nothing…..absolutely nothing, to warrant a call up. He is just given chance after chance…..other players should be given the same chance too. So if they are calling in guys like him, Sabbi, Cade, Jesus and others should be given SHOT AFTER SHOT TOO, or at least called into camp…

    • You’re asking Pochettino to solve a deficit in this two game series by using players he likely is not going bring to the World Cup.

I’m sure Pochettino has scouted the Whitecaps very well. I had never heard of Brian White or Blackmon before. If Sabbi is the one WhiteCap that they choose not to call in, I’ll take their word for it.
Same with the Sounders. If you scout them and come up with Roldan instead of Jesus I’m not sure what that says about Jesus but I’m okay with it. They also have 22 caps to look at in Jesus’ case. I had heard of Jesus before.

You talk about speed but keep citing 2022 times. When it comes to speed records three years is a real long time ago.

I’m a great believer in players learning, and improving ( see Roldan, C) but tell me why I should think Cade Cowell in November 2025 is going to do jack shit vs either Paraguay or Uruguay?

There is a long list of athletes in American sports who are built like Gods and look like a billion dollars but maybe don’t perform as advertised.

Cade has some talent, his story is not over yet and I wish him well but so far I find him too inconsistent to be a reliable international level attacker.

    • Bac, I hope it’s like the Weston situation, they know what Matt can do so they don’t need to bring him let him get his rest and recovery time. By my math only Freeman and Luna are in off season.

      Reply
      • Weston has been discarded and brought back to life a couple of times.
He’s pretty good at winning managers over.

Matt got to Qatar on the strength of his Revs performance. After Qatar , he’s won a starter’s job a few tmes but it always felt short term, temporary. I don’t see him ever winning a #1 job in the EPL or BL

Whatever Matt Turner is, he ain’t no Weston McKennie.

There is a popular myth running around on SBI that shotstopping is the single most important skill for a keeper.
        This is bullshit.
If it were true Matt, who is a greatshot stopper on his day, would have an EPL job and he does not have one. He still might be our #1, who knows. Freese is the only USMNT keeepr who is a mortal lock . At the very least Freese is the #3 keeper, the PK shootout specialist, brought in to break enemy hearts.

      • V: simply making the comparison that they are both (Weston and Matt) national team vets with plenty of film of their abilities so Poch doesn’t need to run them out every match to determine their value.

      • Vacqui, it is absolutely true that the single most valuable thing a gk can do is saving shots. It might not be the cool thing at the moment, but it is still true. And it is, in fact, why Petrovic, who is the best shotstopper in MLS history, is a $30 million player and an EPL starter. His footskills are… suspect. His distribution has never been as dangerous as Turner’s. He just happens to be that much better at actually keeping shots out that someone was willing to overlook his weaker points.

      • nkh,

“And it is, in fact, why Petrovic, who is the best shotstopper in MLS history, is a $30 million player and an EPL starter.”

I am willing to bet that every current #1 and #2 keeper in the EPL is a great shot stopper. I am pretty sure none of them suck at it.

The narrative is often about distribution and shot stopping, as if they were the only things keepers do.

        They aren’t.

The best keepers integrate well with the defense and generally put everyone at ease. When Matt was starting in Qatar he had a number of flaws but most of all he took that job, made it his and was very much in charge and did a good job. He had confidence.

Watching Freese during this latest USMNT run of his, he has been embraced by the team. Whatever technical deficiencies he has relative to whoever else might show up to challenge him, he now carries the confidence that this is now his team. He is “THE” keeper and he gets better every game.

Matt Turner was the same way with the USMNT going into Qatar but afterwards, especially in light of his failures at the club level, he seemed to have lost confidence in himself and Freese was there to take it away from him.

Most managers will always tend to want keepers who can do it all but if pressed will shade towards the great distributor. A great distributor ( like the guys at Liverpool or Man City ) can keep putting your offense in good spots while a great shot stopper can, at best, just delay the inevitable.

  3. IV: “personally i think the risk aversion in terms of young prospects and new blood is a bigger actual problem — even this roster i have seen most of these guys before,” Who is missing?

    Reply
    • JR,

I challenge anyone to name, today, a 23-26 man USMNT roster of at least half ass quality where “most” of the guys have not been seen by “most” of the fans on SBI.

      Reply
      • Exactly, IV with his personal belief that only NT play matters makes perhaps easier to name 23 guys without caps, but to pick 23 half way decent guys without no caps and no mistakes in youth level would be fairly difficult. It would probably be nothing but guys in European youth leagues.

    • grandstanding bs. do you folks watch the games? we can barely win. and the point is, the “26th man” doesn’t have to beat out balogun or pulisic. he is competing with the sketchier end of the roster. the screwups and people who can’t get in games.

examples roster guys with issues from this year’s tournaments: turner, tolkin, zimmermann, sullivan, berhalter, harriel, downs, both aaronsons, ream, LDLT, white, brady, johnny, CCV, musah, sargent, tessmann, mcglynn, gutierrez, scally.

or, the current roster, meh on klinsmann, trusty, zawadzki, morris.

or some of the regular disappointments, horvath, steffen, zendejas, busio, cowell.

we also have injured players like vazquez, dest, or jedi who may involuntarily miss if they can’t heal up.

can you fiction writers admit that a chunk of the bench — perhaps even parts of the lineup — are shaky ground? or are you the types in the “coach always gets it right” bandwagon even if our record is 8-6-2 this year including heavy padding.

put differently — and to be fair i wouldn’t have picked him — how is it roldan comes in off the street and outplays most of the MF? “but we’re set.” whatever.

You don’t understand how soccer teams work do you?

You compare players to each other and rate them that way.
So you have Cole Campbell rated over Alex Zendejas.
Managers compare player by what they do for the team and rate them that way.

      • So your list of “new guys” contains a bunch of guys we’ve already seen, some guys that are cap tied with other countries, guys who have never represented the US at any level, guys you disparaged when playing a few weeks ago with the U20s, and Noahkai Banks. I’m surprised you didn’t try to throw John Brooks on there.

  4. How many times have we posted on this site “Will Poch call into camp before the World Cup? It looks like that door has opened. I think we all agree Poch by now knows the key players. This roster looks like an assessment to fill in the remaining roster spots.

Pepi – Four years removed from missing out on Qatar, he’s ready. Balogun, Wright and Pepi are the top strikers in the pool.
Reyna – With McKennie and Tillman out, he now gets his chance. He is arguably our best playmaker, and here’s hoping he makes a good impression. He needs a confidence boost before heading back to Germany.
Scally – Can he fit into the system and tactics Poch has in mind for this team? There’s no questioning his ability.
Trusty – Poch wants CBs who can distribute. It feels like Trusty and CCV are in direct competition.
GKs – Why not bring in some competition at this stage?
Musah – He may just need a transfer at this point. Atalanta seems disinterested.

    Reply
    • How is this keeper pool not bringing in competition based on what we have now?

Steffan isn’t what he was 4 years ago when Berghalter decided not to bring him to Qatar. The big omission is Turner. But, Poch clearly doesn’t appreciate Turner . . .maybe that goes back to Turner making big mistakes in the EPL where Poch coached. I don’t think we are missing any GK playing abroad.

Celetano has been a good MLS keeper. I personally don’t get the Klinnsman call, but I have no idea how competitive Serie B is or what skills he shows. Schulte has been called up a few times now.

I think Freeze is Poch’s guy.

      Reply
      • Serie B is significantly sub-MLS quality-wise. Klinsmann was very poor at LAG and just as poor at LAG II. Now he’s pretty scratch in a poor league. Brady is injured, so maybe that would have been an option. But this just feels like a “we must call in someone, this is someone, we must call in this” situation.

      • The numbers say he’s still the best we have. If you want to stick with Freese, ok. I’ve never been convinced by him, but Steffen has earned another look with his past two seasons. I guess give Schulte another run, sure.

There’s just no point now of even bothering with people like Celentano or Klinsmann. They’re objectively worse than the other options. Klinsmann in particular is terrible. He was sub-NextPro.

There might be positions you can still find an option. But, however you feel about the quality of the pool, GK is not one of them. We have about four, maybe five, real options, all of whom will be starting for their clubs when the WC comes, hopefully three of whom are not injured. It’s not worth wasting time these guys.

      • Nkh: Turner has been back in London training with Crystal Palace. I wonder if either he’s working on a move back to England or perhaps he’s helping tie up any loose ends from family life in England before they move back full time to Boston. I couldn’t find any official comment from Poch on his absence.

      • This is actually to JR.

Yeah, I saw that. Not quite sure what to make of it? Personal stuff? Knew he wasn’t getting called up and just wants to stay sharp as much as possible since the Revs are done for the season? The Blazing Musket hasn’t said anything about it either, so I dont know. My understanding is that the Revs are planning on having him at least through the loan period. I think thats his best chance of getting playing time, anyway.

      • Nkh: I’m just guessing, it was a weird timetable for Matt and his family. Season ended, right to NT camp, then sold to Lyon but deal is basically off before GC even ends, then it’s back to NE. I guess at his pay level, people probably just pack everything for you so maybe there’s nothing for them to do.

    • 3-4-2-1

Could play Roldan or Berhalter as a dual 10 if needed as well? Not their best spots but both could slot there. I guess we’ll see Gio’s fitness level if he starts. I mean usually I hate it but in this case I wouldn’t be mad if Dest played as an attacker.

      Reply
      • Poch played Berhalter as a RW in the GC…and I could see him doing the same with Dest. The numbers don’t match – we’ve got 5 forwards, 7 CM’s, and 10 defenders this camp (and 4 GK’s, but that’s its own beast.) What that tells me is that at least one of the defenders, most likely, gets a look at another position and my feeling is, it’s Dest, since we brought 3 RB’s (Freeman, Scally, and Dest). But clearly we aren’t going to see some guys playing where they play for club, or where they’ve played for the US in the past.

  5. Very interesting roster. No Richards, no Mckennie, and we know about Pulisic, Weah, and Tillman.

Luna, Reyna, Brendo as the 10s called in.

  6. Why no Lund, he has been getting nice minutes at Koln???!!! Jedi and Weah are both out. Why is Berhalther Jr. And Sean Zawadaski called up but cant call up Brian Gutierrez who is planning to switch to Mexico. 🤦

    Reply
    • Because Gutierrez is planning to switch to Mexico. Poch doesn’t call up players who arent 100 percent on board with the US. Which I think is commendable.

      Reply
      • No thats not the reason, he was called up before and is tired of being left off. He also has not gotten the passport yet, so as today at this moment he isn’t eligible for Mexico. So what you said makes no sense! So tired of you all trying to make me look dumb on this site! Why I dont come on here as much!

      • 2tone,

“Because Gutierrez is planning to switch to Mexico.”

That is categorically false, so stop spreading lies. He is considering a possible change to Mexico and is in the process of securing a Mexican passport as “he wants to keep his options open.”

        Stryker91,

Zawadzki does not play the same position as Gutierrez, so not apples to apples. That said, on merit, production, and impact at the club level, Gutierrez has earned a callup this window instead of Luna. Diego has not played a competitive game in 2 weeks, and when playing a competitive game for club, he has not been impactful or productive since returning from the Gold Cup this past summer. Luna has 2 G and 1 A in 15 club games since then.

      • Papi Grande categorically false? I said he is planning on switching to Mexico. You say he is considering switching to Mexico? Same language my guy. So Im not spreading lies.

Poch doesn’t call up players who arent all in. Gutierrez isnt all in. If he is planning/considering a switch to Mexico. The US shouldn’t be chasing anyone.

      • personally i think the risk aversion in terms of young prospects and new blood is a bigger actual problem — even this roster i have seen most of these guys before, and i don’t expect celentano or klinsmann, the exceptions, to actually play. if we get to the world cup and some spots like DM and back are still in flux, risk aversion ends up the bigger problem.

i do think we should demand loyalty to get called or in particular to get fast tracked. fast tracking part of the reward should be for making the commitment. but this isn’t exactly chandler and FJ, i don’t see the straddling as an issue hurting the field product.

i do think we have lost some players for lack of aggression about cap tying, but that’s different. you can’t control the decision. you can encourage the decision you want by using those players when you can and taking risks to call them up.

    • i am not sure whether to write off gutierrez long term. short term he is technical but so slow he struggles at the international level to separate to then get off the precision pass he can deliver. if he can’t get space around the defender to get the cross off, so what.

but he is 22 so that’s a “this cycle” conclusion.

i will say that mexico can get him to switch and win his allegiance but do you really see him making a world cup roster any more for them?? in which case why undercut being an american born player in a US league?? except for araujo many of these contested players they grab are basically committed for the sake of commitment. eg how did ochoa help himself one bit?? do they even use that DM kid they took from us??

      Reply
      • I can’t see him breaking in with El Tri this cycle. He’s looking like he’ll always be behind 17 yr old Mora anyway as well. Probably less overall depth for El Tri and their roster is a little older.
        ——————
To be fair Jona Gonzalez, David Ochoa, and Efrain Alvarez all hit walls in their club careers with little playing time over the last number of years. Alvarez has finally become a regular starter in Liga Mx (but played 0 mins in GC), JoGo is a squad player for Juarez hasn’t been capped since ‘19, and Ochoa never capped is a backup with LAFC. I kind of feel Guitierrez would have similar results with El Tri but don’t see him playing anytime soon with USMNT either.
