Americans Abroad Midweek Rewind: Robinson, Shrader, and more

Fulham’s EFL Cup journey came to an end on Wednesday but Antonee Robinson walked away as one of the top performers on the night.

Robinson assisted on the Cottagers’ only goal in a 2-1 road loss to Newcastle United. The U.S. men’s national team left back continued his positive return to the starting lineup, logging 90 minutes at St. James Park.

Despite the Magpies grabbing an early 1-0 lead, Robinson’s dangerous cross from the left wing in the 16th minute allowed Fulham to tie things up. Sasa Lukic arrived in the 18-yard box and headed home Robinson’s cross into the bottom corner.

Both Fulham and Newcastle United did well to create chances as the match went on, but the hosts would eventually advance into the semifinals. Lewis Miley’s 92nd-minute goal proved to be the decider as Robinson and Fulham suffered elimination in the final eight.

The 28-year-old finished the match with four duels won, five clearances, three interceptions, and nine defensive recoveries. It also marked Robinson’s first match with a goal contribution since January 14th in all competitions.

Fulham will now turn its attention back to Premier League play, where Nottingham Forest awaits on Monday at Craven Cottage.

In Europe, Korbin Shrader scored in Lyon’s Champions League victory over Atletico Madrid. Naomi Girma and Alyssa Thompson both featured in Chelsea’s road win over Wolfsburg.

In Spain, Johnny Cardoso started in Atletico Madrid’s Copa Del Rey win.

In Scotland, Auston Trusty went the distance in Celtic’s shocking road loss to Dundee United.
