The league phases of the UEFA Champions and Europa Leagues will come to a close next week with several American players fighting for places in the next round.
From Weston McKennie to Folarin Balogun to Auston Trusty, there will be zero shortage of drama as several clubs aim to reach the top-eight or avoid elimination from the competition altogether.
Only four clubs have been eliminated from Champions League knockout round contention while six have been ousted from advancing in the Europa League. The top eight finishers in each league will earn a bye and advance to the Round of 16 while clubs finishing No. 9-24 will head to a two-legged playoff series.
Here is a rundown of who remains alive in both competitions and how high they could finish in their respective league tables:
Champions League
Johnny Cardoso and Atletico Madrid are currently in 12th place and could finish as high as third (Round of 16 spot). Atletico Madrid hosts Bodo/Glimt on Matchday 8.
Yunus Musah and Atalanta are currently in 13th place and could finish as high as third (Round of 16 spot). Atalanta visits Union St. Gilloise on Matchday 8.
Weston McKennie and Juventus are currently in 15th place and could finish as high as third (Round of 16 spot). Juventus visits Folarin Balogun and Monaco on Matchday 8.
Tim Weah and Marseille are currently in 19th place and could finish as high as 14th. Marseille visits Club Brugge on Matchday 8.
Malik Tillman and Bayer Leverkusen are currently in 20th place and could finish as high as 14th. Bayer Leverkusen hosts Villarreal on Matchday 8.
Folarin Balogun and Monaco are currently in 21st place and could finish as high as 14th. Monaco host Weston McKennie and Juventus on Matchday 8.
Sergino Dest and PSV are currently in 22nd place and could finish as high as 16th. PSV hosts Bayern Munich on Matchday 8.
Josh Wynder and Benfica are currently in 29th place and could finish as high as 19th (playoff spot). Benfica hosts Real Madrid on Matchday 8.
Timmy Chandler and Eintracht Frankfurt are eliminated from knockout round contention regardless of their result next week.
Europa League
Tanner Tessmann and Lyon are currently in 1st place and are already guaranteed a Round of 16 berth regardless of their result next week. Lyon hosts PAOK Salonika on Matchday 8.
Erik Palmer-Brown and Panathinaikos are currently in 19th place and could finish as high as sixth. Panathinaikos hosts AS Roma on Matchday 8.
Auston Trusty and Celtic are currently in 24th place and could finish as high as 16th. Celtic will be eliminated next week with a loss but could seal a playoff spot with a draw (pending other results elsewhere). Celtic hosts FC Utrecht on Matchday 8.
