Ethan Horvath isn’t scheduled to play another minute for EFL League One side Cardiff City, but it hasn’t stopped the club from helping him find the next chapter of his career.
Horvath is set to depart the Welsh club during the January Transfer Window after his recent loan spell with Sheffield Wednesday ended earlier this month. The veteran goalkeeper isn’t part of the Cardiff City plans for the second half of the season, opening the door for him to seek playing time elsewhere ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Horvath made 16 appearances for the Owls in the EFL Championship over the past five months, registering two clean sheets. However, despite Horvath’s best efforts, Sheffield Wednesday look all but set for relegation after being deducted 18 points due to the club’s financial situation.
Several MLS clubs have interest in Horvath’s services, sources previously confirmed to SBI, while interest also remains in Europe. For now, Horvath remains under contract with the Bluebirds, and club manager Brian Barry-Murphy is hoping to help him get to playing regular minutes again.
“Ethan’s got a lot of interest,” said Barry-Murphy in a prematch club interview. “I don’t know from how many different people and different places, so it’s up to him and we’ll support him and whatever he decides is the best option for him to find the football that he wants before the end of the season. It’s a big end of the season for him with the World Cup on the horizon.”
Horvath has made over 230 appearances during his club career and also has earned 10 caps for the U.S. men’s national team to date. The 30-year-old will hope a new club chapter will propel him back into the USMNT mix, especially with only one international window before the World Cup schedule begins.
