Ethan Horvath joins Red Bulls in permanent transfer

Ethan Horvath is heading back stateside for the next chapter of his club career.

The New York Red Bulls have acquired Horvath in a permanent deal from Cardiff City, both clubs announced Thursday. In order to acquire Horvath, the Red Bulls also had to send $150,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM) to Charlotte FC to acquire his Discovery Priority Rights.

He signed a one-and-a-half year contract with the Red Bulls through 2027. New York also holds two contract years for 2028 and 2029 respectively.

SBI previously reported that the Red Bulls were closing in on Horvath’s services.

“Ethan brings a tremendous amount of experience and professionalism to our group,” said Red Bulls Head of Sport Julian de Guzman. “He has competed at the highest levels, and his leadership will be invaluable for our locker room and our goalkeeping unit as a whole.”

The 30-year-old was signed on loan in August by Sheffield Wednesday after first-choice goalkeeper Pierce Charles suffered a serious injury which kept him out for close to four months. Horvath made 16 appearances for the Owls, registering two clean sheets.

He also earned Man of the Match honors in Sheffield Wednesday’s EFL Cup victory over Premier League visitors Leeds United last summer.

Horvath has played for several clubs in Europe including Sheffield Wednesday, Cardiff City, Nottingham Forest, Luton Town, and Club Brugge. He made 36 appearances over two seasons for Cardiff City before being loaned out. In total, he’s made 230 appearances abroad at club level.

Horvath remains a goalkeeping option for the U.S. men’s national team heading into the FIFA World Cup later this year. He’s earned 10 senior caps to date and will now work under former USMNT midfielder Michael Bradley, who was named the Red Bulls new head coach earlier this winter.

“Ethan has been a proven winner for both club and country, and we are really excited to add him to our roster ahead of the 2026 season,” said Bradley.” He has shown throughout his career that he can perform in big moments. He is a strong shot-stopper, commands his area well, and fits the way we want to play.”

  1. Now that’s what I like to hear….. Stop bouncing around from one English Championship team to the next. Come back to MLS and be a regular starter on a good team.
