Haji Wright bags winning goal vs. Millwall, reaches double-digits for season

Haji Wright has now been Coventry City’s hero for the second time in the past four days.

Wright scored the winning goal for Frank Lampard’s squad on Tuesday as the Sky Blues downed visiting Millwall 2-1 at the CBS Arena. The U.S. men’s national team forward took his season total up to 10 with his second-half strike, making it the sixth-consecutive campaign in which Wright has recorded double digits.

Both teams went into halftime deadlocked at 1-1 after Millwall’s Mihailo Ivanovic cancelled out Romain Esse’s opening goal for Coventry City.

As both sides pushed for a late winner, it was Wright who delivered with 12 minutes to play. Brandon Thomas-Asante laid off a pass in the box for Wright, who delivered a left-footed finish into the bottom-left corner.

The Sky Blues would hang on to claim their 17th league victory of the season, moving nine points clear of third-place Middlesbrough in the race for automatic promotion.

Wright logged 81 minutes in the match, making his 27th appearance of the season in all competitions.

“He deserves a big shout,” Lampard said postmatch in a club interview about Wright’s performance. “His overall game tonight impressed me more than just his goal involvements. He’s running, he’s working, he’s pressing defenders and helping. He got his goal which is what he deserved.”

Up next for Coventry City is a trip to Norwich City on January 26 as the league leaders seek their third-straight win.

  1. When Coventry moves up to the Premier League, he is likely to enjoy a cup of coffee with them in the EPL, but in that league, he is not at the level of being a consistently impactful striker / player, so if Coventry stay up, he won’t be with them for long.

  2. if they go up, Coventry will definitely need to add more quality to the team, and that includes ST. In saying that, Haji has shown in every league he’s been in that he can step up and be productive at that level, and 6 consecutive double digit scoring seasons speaks to that, so I think he’ll feature a lot in the Prem imo

    • Yep I think people have forgot that he has had 10 plus 6 consecutive goal scoring seasons. I would say he deserves a good shot in the EPL with Covebtry as the starter. Coventry needs upgrades more in midfield and CB for the EPL.

  3. Back to scoring ways. Thats good. Balogun isnt producing for Monaco and Pepi is injured. Good to see him back scoring goals and being a difference maker. That month long injury derailed him a bit.

    • Balogun had everything in that game, speed, passing ability, making perfect runs, hold-up strength against defenders, creating openings, everything but what really mattered the most…….TAKING THE SHOT. His lacking ability to shoot, especially shooting from distance, anytime he’s in front of goal and to FORCE the goalkeeper to make a save, really limits him as a threat in the final third. He needs to learn/practice to “let fly” anywhere and everywhere around the lines of the 18-yard box. I know the scoreline seems to tell one side of a terrible story, but Monaco had Real Madrid pinned for several “short stretches” in the game. They just couldn’t test the goalkeeper or capitalize on their possession.

  4. Say it again regarding Wright – the man’s a heckuva instinctive finisher with the full set of tools. Both feet, head, can dribble you or bully, can both create and poach. And it surely does look like he’s heading to the Prem; Coventry keeps putting more and more daylight between themselves and the pack.

It’s hard to imagine there’s not a spot for him at the WC if he’s healthy.
