Americans Abroad Midweek Rewind: McKenzie, Weah, and more

American defender Mark McKenzie helped Toulouse remain one of the tougher defensive units to break down this winter.

McKenzie logged his latest 90-minute shift on Wednesday as Toulouse edged second-tier side Amiens 1-0. The U.S. men’s national team centerback helped Toulouse registered its fifth shutout over the past eight matches across all competitions.

Yann Ghobo’s first-half goal was all Toulouse needed to advance in the competition, becoming the seventh Ligue 1 side to reach the final eight.

McKenzie completed 89 of 95 passes on the night, while also delivering interceptions, and winning two duels. The 26-year-old now has 21 appearances on the season for Toulouse, keeping them in the mix for a top-four finish in Ligue 1 and also in the hunt for a potential trophy lift in the cup competition.

Up next for Carles Martinez’s squad is a trip to Angers on Sunday.

Elsewhere, Tim Weah assisted once in Marseille’s cup win over Rennes. Tanner Tessmann and Lyon also advanced in the competition after defeating Laval. Weston McKennie and Juventus suffered Coppa Italia elimination at the hands of Atalanta. Christian Pulisic missed AC Milan’s Serie A win over Bologna. Alex Zendejas made his return for Club America in CONCACAF Champions Cup play.
