James Rodriguez joins Minnesota United on short-term deal

One of South America’s top modern-day talents is making the move to St. Paul.

James Rodriguez has joined MLS’ Western Conference side Minnesota United on a short-term deal through June 2026, the Loons announced Friday. Minnesota United also holds a club option to extend his contract through December.

“I’m very happy for this new chapter in my life,” said Rodríguez. “I hope to be at my best so I can bring joy to this city and to all of the people who are putting their faith in me. I’m looking forward to meeting all of the passionate Minnesota fans because I’m also a passionate player who wants to give everything on the field and always wants to win.”

Rodriguez has been one of the more entertaining attacking midfielders over the past 10+ years, tallying 127 goals and 161 assists in 516 club appearances across all competitions. After starting his career with his native Envigado, Rodriguez later played for Banfield, FC Porto, and AS Monaco before joining European giants Real Madrid in 2014.

He scored 29 goals in 85 appearances for Los Blancos, but also was loaned out to Bundesliga heavyweights Bayern Munich for two seasons. Rodriguez also played for EPL outfit Everton, Brazilian club São Paulo, and most recently Mexican side Club León.

Rodriguez has continued to shine for the Colombian men’s national team, producing 31 goals in 122 caps. He led the Cafeteros to the final of the 2024 Copa America before Colombia fell to Argentina 1-0.

Minnesota United reached the Western Conference semifinals last fall before losing to San Diego 1-0.
