Alyssa Thompson shines in Chelsea’s win over Brighton & Hove Albion

Chelsea carried over its winning spirit from Sunday’s League Cup Final to its return to Women’s Super League action on Wednesday.

Alyssa Thompson shined in the Blues’ 2-1 home win over Brighton & Hove Albion, scoring the opening goal and assisting on the second. The result extended Chelsea’s winning run to five matches in all competitions, keeping them seven points back of league-leading Manchester City.

Thompson needed just 13 minutes to boost Sonya Bompastor’s squad in front, rising high to head home Sandy Baltimore’s cross.

It marked Thompson’s ninth goal of the season in all competitions.

However, Chelsea’s early lead would only last four minutes before Carla Camacho equalized for the visiting Seagulls to make it 1-1.

Thompson would help the Blues regain their advantage before halftime, setting up Alexia Potter for a go-ahead goal on her first WSL start. The 21-year-old held up possession in the Brighton box before teeing up Potter for a confident finish.

Thompson would play 65 minutes in the match as Chelsea would hang on for a key three points.

Fellow U.S. women’s national team player Naomi Girma remained out of the squad following her recent injury. Girma did not feature in Sunday’s League Cup Final victory over Manchester United, but could be back as early as Saturday.

The Blues next face off with London City Lionesses in WSL action this weekend before taking on Arsenal in UEFA Women’s Champions League first leg action on March 24.
