Americans Abroad: Coffey, Man City pushing towards league title, and more

Sam Coffey is moving ever closer to lifting silverware in her first season in England.

Coffey and Manchester City moved nine points clear atop the WSL table on Saturday after downing rivals Manchester United 3-0 in league play. The U.S. women’s national team midfielder logged her latest 90 minutes, helping the Citizens extend their unbeaten run to five matches in all competitions.

Vivianne Miedema registered a first-half brace at Old Trafford before Kerstin Casparij capped off the road result with a goal four minutes after halftime.

Coffey won six duels, made three tackles, and seven defensive recoveries. The 27-year-old has now made eight appearances in all competitions.

Fellow USWNT player Phallon Tullis-Joyce made three saves in the loss for the Red Devils, who dropped to fourth place in the league table.

The Citizens have three league matches remaining but know that third-place Arsenal has two matches in hand.

Here is a closer look at the rest of this weekend’s Americans Abroad WSL roundup:

Naomi Girma scores as Chelsea edge Aston Villa

Chelsea rebounded from a midweek UEFA Women’s Champions League defeat to Arsenal by edging Aston Villa in WSL action.

Naomi Girma scored her second goal of the season as the Blues claimed a 4-3 win at Kingsmeadow on Sunday. Girma started and played 54 minutes in the match, helping the Blues stay in the race for a top-three finish.

A six-goal first half saw the visiting Villains grab an early 1-0 lead before goals from Sam Kerr, Girma, and Lauren James propel Chelsea ahead 3-1 after 27 minutes. However, Kirsty Hanson’s brace in a four-minute span drew the visitors level before halftime.

Sjoeke Nusken delivered the winning goal for Sonya Bompastor’s squad with eight minutes to play, giving the Blues a vital home win.

Girma’s USWNT teammate Alyssa Thompson played 73 minutes in the match from her right midfield position.

Chelsea will turn its attention back to UWCL play on Wednesday, seeking a second-leg comeback over visiting Arsenal.

Emily Fox did not feature in Arsenal’s 5-2 North London Derby win over Tottenham on Saturday, keeping the Gunners mathematically alive in the title race.

With two matches in hand, the Gunners cannot avoid any slip-ups, sitting 11 points back of league-leading Man City.

Arsenal are riding an 11-match winning run heading into the aforementioned trip to Stamford Bridge on Wednesday. The Gunners are up 3-1 on aggregate and also remain alive in the Women’s FA Cup competition this spring.
