Sergino Dest’s availability for the upcoming U.S. men’s national team window is in serious doubt.
Dest was substituted off in the 57th minute on Saturday during PSV’s 2-1 comeback Eredvisie victory over AZ Alkmaar. The USMNT defender grabbed his left hamstring and tumbled to the ground before eventually needing help from two of PSV’s medical staff to exit the field.
PSV did not provide a timetable for Dest’s return but the American did grant to be back in action by season’s end.
“Exactly how long Dest will be offside is currently difficult to predict,” a club statement read. “The 37-time international of the American team is focusing on a return to the final phase of the season, with the World Cup next summer in the United States, Canada and Mexico as the important goal.”
“I will do everything in my power to get back in top shape towards the end of the season and I am convinced that will work,” added Dest. “Thank you for the many heartwarming messages. That support only gives me extra motivation to work hard on my recovery.”
Dest, 25, missed most of last season as he recovered from a torn ACL during the end of the 2023-24 campaign. However, the versatile defender has since returned with a bang this season, scoring two goals and adding five assists in 35 appearances for the Dutch giants.
He earned four caps with the USMNT in 2025 and remains a top option for Mauricio Pochettino’s squad ahead of the FIFA World Cup this June, but his new injury could force him out of upcoming home friendlies against Belgium (March 28) and Portugal (March 31).
PSV are 20 points clear atop the Eredvisie table but have already been eliminated from this season’s UEFA Champions League and KNVB Cup.

all due respect to some of the usual bricklobbing at my expense, but “freeman as CB” has been a key solution to our years-long backline problems, where we finally started winning again. if he has to move, we’re a mess at CB again.
if he stays put and dest isn’t in, some of you are full of crap. dest played both recent wins and started half of them. if not him, who? scally has had bad issues getting beat on the backside. arfsten is a mixed bag who attacks well but ships goals. i think it starts to bring weah or musah or somesuch back into play. they have to be able to defend their position wide in a 343.
at that point it’s a little smug to act like we have it well in hand, don’t need to try anything new, etc. i realize you’re too scared to do anything at this point but it will probably be the reason we exit if we don’t patch it somehow.
and it’s a perfect example of why most US teams historically have carried more than the roster size for pre world cup camps. if dest comes back, he needs an injury cushion. if dest is not, you might want options.
also holds true for jedi, adams, etc. is effing obvious. i am sure this was done for cost cutting purposes for most normal windows but this is the one window you don’t want to be playing numbers games or empowering green lampshades for.
setting aside, performance and position competition. we have spots all over the field, 9, back, DM, AM, where it’s like who makes this roster and who starts. i get saying we’ve had 4 years to sort it, but all things being equal at the end, aren’t you the “form” people? you get the viable candidates in one place and take the ones who outplay their competition in camp.
emphasis on “viable.” this is not a cole campbell camp. it’s morris vs berhalter vs roldan, etc. or pepi vs agyemang vs balogun, etc.
IV,
“but “freeman as CB” has been a key solution to our years-long backline problems, where we finally started winning again. if he has to move, we’re a mess at CB again.”
You are saying Freeman at Cb has solved our years long backline problems and is the reason for why the USMNT is ” winning again? Really? Where is your proof ?
Freeman is currently a rotational right-back at Villareal , having made three substitute appearances since joining in January 2026. His transition has been rapid because of the club’s urgent need for right-back cover. It does not look like he will get any PT at CB for Villareal.
So any CB time Alex gets before the World Cup he will have to get with the USMNT. And that means that if you are correct and Alex ‘s USMNT role is at CB, then Dest’s direct replacement is likely going to be someone else.
• He made his debut on February 9, 2026, playing 17 minutes in a 4-1 victory over Espanyol.
• He has logged 31 total minutes across three league matches as of early March 2026.
• His “attack-minded” style fits Villarreal’s system, though it has been noted that he must improve his defensive positioning and passing to handle the technical demands of Spanish football.
• He is currently competing for minutes with Santiago Mouriño and Pau Navarro.
Date Opponent Result Minutes Played
Feb 9 Espanyol 4-1 (W) 17′
Feb 14 Getafe 1-2 (L) 12′
Feb 18 Levante 1-0 (W) 2’
Feb 28 Barcelona 1-4 (L) Unused Sub
“at that point it’s a little smug to act like we have it well in hand, don’t need to try anything new, etc. i realize you’re too scared to do anything at this point but it will probably be the reason we exit if we don’t patch it somehow.”
So what it is this new thing that the USMNT has yet to try?
He doesn’t play CB in defense. He slides inside when we have the ball for passing angles. Please just pause your tv when our opponent has the ball. You’ll see a pretty clear 4-4-2 with Freeman wide on the right when we are on defense. When Dest and Freeman were on the field together Dest played as a RW with Tolkin on the left being the get forward FB. If Dest starts as a RB he gets forward and the LB stays home making a 3 man backline in possession. If you really think Freeman is the key you just replace Dest with Weah and start Freeman where he did against Uruguay.
——————-
The defense didn’t “get better” when Freeman moved to CB, the team just got better at its transition from offense to defense. The team got better because they trusted each other to be where they were supposed to be (so you didn’t have guys running all over trying to mark others men) and honestly the defense got better because we found better passing angles on offense and didn’t turn it over as much.
Gotta burn some sage(not doing witchcraft/santeria), and ask the Taino Daca Indigenous ancestors to protect Dest and all other US men players! We need everyone fit and in form, end of this month leading to the Summer.
the US has had its share of injuries historically, eg, o’brien and holden, but i think part of the difference is back in the day (and i mean through 2010 or so), we had a limited foreign contingent, they might be on lower division teams, and we had fully cooperative MLS teams. i don’t think our players were running around 100% in the spring before a world cup. it was a dirty secret that likely roster players were taking it easy around now in MLS.
i see it as a trade off of becoming a maturing soccer nation.
the way the good ones deal with it, is you earn your roster spot and they develop a few layers of players to step up. we have people at positions like keeper or CB who have rarely had to prove they belong on the roster, at all. and at some positions like wingback the quality depth hasn’t been sorted beyond 1-2 players at a spot.
IV,
” the US has had its share of injuries historically, eg, o’brien and holden, but i think part of the difference is back in the day (and i mean through 2010 or so), we had a limited foreign contingent, they might be on lower division teams, and we had fully cooperative MLS teams. ”
Nonsense. You’re spreading a lot of myths again.
JOB’s injuries set in after the 2002 World Cup. By 2006 JOB was barely playing for Chivas USA. Arena took him to the 2006 WC anyway. He played 45 minutes in the opening loss to the Czech Republic; this was his last game for the USMNT.
Stu broke his leg (March 2010) In a friendly against the Netherlands, Nigel de Jong broke Holden’s right leg. After a “miraculous” recovery to make the 2010 World Cup roster he was limited to a 5-minute substitute appearance against England due to lingering effects.
Then:
* Fractured Femur & Knee Damage (March 2011): Playing for Bolton against Manchester United, Jonny Evans fractured Holden’s left femur and caused deep cartilage damage. Stu was in career-best form, and was eventually sidelined from the USMNT for over two years.
* First Torn ACL (July 2013): Returning to the USMNT and performing well in the 2013 Gold Cup, Stu tore the ACL in his right knee in the 23rd minute of the final against Panama. That ended his hopes of participating in the 2014 World Cup and ended his senior international career.
The truth is we just didn’t have that many suitable players before this current era.
Not that we are at level of France, Argentina, or any of the other big boys but we have more depth right now than in the past.
“i mean through 2010 or so),”
During that period we had no depth, here or abroad. The fact that a completely unfit JOB was on the 2006 WC squad and a completely unfit Stu was on the 2010 WC squad, both of whom played just minutes if at all, tells you that. And you have forgotten the gyrations Bob went through to try to replace Charlie Davies for the 2010 WC.
JOB and Stu were included in those WC squads because Bruce and Bob had no one better.
“the way the good ones deal with it, is you earn your roster spot and they develop a few layers of players to step up. we have people at positions like keeper or CB who have rarely had to prove they belong on the roster, at all. and at some positions like wingback the quality depth hasn’t been sorted beyond 1-2 players at a spot.”
More ridiculous falsehoods.
The USMNT has always gone into the WC with a squad full of question marks. The entire 2022 squad, with the possible exception of Pulisic was one big question mark yet they did oaky.
You can’t name a USMNT WC roster where going into it, we have had ” quality depth …sorted beyond 1-2 players at a spot”
Sometimes it has worked out , and sometimes it hasn’t.
TIV agreed I remember Altidore, Hejduk, Holden, and O’Brian all getting injured close to before the tournament use to begin.
Chris Armas missed the world cup in 2002 when he was by all accounts the best defensive holding midfield in the US roster.
Charlie Davies missing 2010. Gooch Onweyu was significantly limited due to a knee injury in the build up.
There are always injuries and none of them are limited to offense v. defense or domestic v. abroad.
Stuff happens and you have to hope you have someone who can step up.
That being said, who thought a year ago that the outside backs were going to be an issue for the USMNT and now it is because of injuries to Dest and Robinson?
there will be more to come in the buildup that will make some player decisions for Poch, too
unfortunate this crap, no doubt, mostly for the players imho, but the team too of course
people chuckled at me saying we should try out some bench backs in march, or have extras in world cup camp in may. this is precisely why.
that and we’re using freeman as RCB so in a 343 you can’t double-count him as both CB and as dest’s contingency.
you then need to know, is weah the next option, or fossey, or scally, or do we call up another CB and push freeman wide.
you ignore this at your “wondo” expense. he wasn’t going to really play, or was going to be used to press teams late in games. and then suddenly injuries and subs, and he’s in a contested game, needs to finish that sitter in the knockouts.
it’s kind of like sometimes it matters whether your NFL team drafts well in the late rounds or who makes the roster or the practice squad at the end of the 53.
No one counts Freeman as a CB except 2tone. Freeman and Scally can play there in the eventuality Dest has not recovered by June.
Poch wants a 3-2-4-1 when we have the ball. He’s done it with 3 CBs, 2 CBs and a #6, or 2 CBs and a FB. He’s used both midfielders and FBs as the outsides in his line of 4. That flexibility allows him to even play without a traditional RB if needed. Often with Dest available it was the LB who stayed home, hence why people think Freeman and Scally have played RCB because they have sat home when Arfsten went forward. Weah fits perfectly in that RWB role. IIs it ideal? NO, Dest is one of our 5 best players and a significant upgrade to Joe or Alex, but it’s hardly a Sky is falling issue. I mean if you wanted to try a new RB next in line are Reynolds, Moore, and DJones (Fossey out injured) all who have caps under Poch (maybe not Reynolds). The time to experiment with depth has passed, it’s time to fine tune. That’s why Poch has called in 67 players during his tenure.
excellent post JR, thank you
In our 3 backline Freeman is a CB. Weah will be the starting RWB and Arfsten can cover both positions of LWB and RWB. Quite frankly Freeman has to show he can actually play Rab at a high level. Personally I think he will be converted to CB at Villarreal.
The other thing is, McKennie and Weah have been playing as wingbacks for most of the season as well, though McKennie’s been all over the place.
Dest is a really good player and we’re better with him. I still really like Alex Freeman, though, and is Dest better than Weah or especially McKennie in the form he’s in right now? Dunno. Also, we’re effectively playing with double 10’s and we really only need 4. We have 6 guys for sure who have performed well there – Pulisic, McKennie, Malik Tillman, Diego Luna, Zendejas, and Brendan Aaronson, and honestly given the way Timothy Tillman played against Uruguay if there’s a late run of injuries it wouldn’t overly worry me to call him either.
But I don’t think we lost Dest for the WC anyway. There’s three grades of hamstring injury and what he’s almost certainly got is a Grade 2 – a partial tear. He was walking…albeit with pain and difficulty. Those take about 4-8 weeks to heal…hence his “I’m going to try to get back before the end of the season”. If he’d had Grade 3 – a complete tear – those take 4-6 months, minimum, and he’d likely not even make it back for the WC, much less the end of the season.
2tone: we don’t actually play a back 3. Well we do but only when we have the ball, at which point Freeman moves inside to provide passing triangles with the CB and DM. When we lose the ball the LB retreats from his attacking position into the LB space and Freeman moves out to defend the widest attacker on the right. When an opponent has possession in our half hit pause and count the players in each line. Against Uruguay when both Dest and Alex started together Dest was playing as RW not as a FB. So if you want to start Alex you replace injured Dest with Weah. If you don’t want to start Alex you start Scally and whoever you want at RW.

“people chuckled at me saying we should try out some bench backs in march, or have extras in world cup camp in may. this is precisely why.”
??? What a load of bullshit.
You think you are the only person who understands that injuries happen?
Dest’s injury doesn’t really change anything unless it turns out to be worse than advertised and keeps him out of the WC.
Everyone on SBI all know that injuries are going to determine the final look of the 26. Pochettino figured that out while you were still in high school.
Ideally the March friendlies would have served as a way to fine tune the WC starters and the most likely 5-8 subs. And the March games still can serve that function because injuries to starters during the World Cup are probable so they need to practice dealing with it within the context of a 26 man roster. Meaning that any 26 man roster they assemble will likely have more than enough capable right backs or right wingbacks.
You probably did not notice because you were too busy gloating but Weah, Weston, Freeman, and maybe can’t play left back Max, or possibly Scally were all going to be called in anyway and could slot in nicely for Sergino.
There are already more than enough candidates to fill in for Dest. In fact, a healthy Dest is not exactly a lock to be a starter or even to play.
So this is a good time to find out how that looks.
James Sands also left St. Pauli’s match today w/injury.
James Sands not going to be on the roster anyway.
