Auston Trusty and Celtic are headed back to Hampden Park for another chance at a trophy lift this May.
Trusty started and played 120 minutes as Celtic outlasted St. Mirren 6-2 after extra time in the Scottish Cup semifinals on Sunday. Martin O’Neill’s squad used four extra time goals to capture the victory after the two sides were level 2-2 after regulation.
Daizen Maeda opened the scoring from Glasgow in the first minute before Anthony Ralston added to Celtic’s advantage in first-half stoppage time.
However, Mikael Mandron trimmed the deficit eight minutes into the second half giving St. Mirren a lifeline.
Mandron would strike again, this time in second-half stoppage time to make it 2-2 and force an extra 30 minutes between the two clubs.
Celtic would take full advantage of the first extra time period though, scoring four goals in a six-minute span to make it 6-2. Kelechi Iheanacho registered a brace while Luke McCowan and Benjamin Nygren also added goals of their own to pad the victory.
Trusty will be seeking his third trophy with Celtic when the reigning SPFL champions take on second-tier Dunfermline Athletic on May 23. The match should feature plenty of storylines as Dunfermline Athletic are managed by former Celtic player and head coach Neil Lennon.
Celtic will first resume league play on April 22 against Falkirk, knowing they are three points back in the title race with five matches to play.
