The U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 will be headlined by five All-MLS matchups.
13 MLS clubs booked their spots into the next round of the annual competition, while two from the USL Championship and one from USL League One joined them. The New York Red Bulls’ Hudson River Derby showdown with NYCFC will be the headlining contest in the Round of 16 while St. Louis CITY SC’s trip to the Chicago Fire is also one to watch.
Charlotte FC’s 6-0 beatdown of the Charlotte Independence sets up a Round of 16 clash with Atlanta United, who edged Chattanooga FC 3-1.
The New England Revolution will take on Orlando City SC after both teams advanced past lower-league opposition this week. New England outlasted Rhode Island FC on penalty kicks 3-1 while Orlando City defeated FC Naples 1-0.
The final All-MLS tie will see the San Jose Earthquakes taking on Minnesota United at PayPal Park. San Jose defeated Phoenix Rising FC 2-0 while Minnesota United outlasted Sacramento Republic 9-8 in a penalty shootout.
There will also be a derby out west as the Colorado Rapids have been paired against USL Championship side Colorado Springs Switchbacks. Colorado Springs pulled one of the upsets of the Round of 32, defeating Sporting KC 3-0.
The Houston Dynamo will seek to avoid an upset at home when USL Championship side Louisville City FC comes to town. Louisville City FC defeated last season’s finalists Austin FC 2-1 away from home in the Round of 32.
Another upset could be on the cards in the final Round of 16 clash as USL League One club One Knoxville SC takes on the Columbus Crew. One Knoxville SC eliminated four-time Open Cup winners DC United on penalty kicks while the Crew rolled past Richmond Kickers 3-0 away from home.
The Round of 16 schedule will take place over April 28-29.
