Haji Wright scores as Coventry City seals EFL Championship title

Haji Wright got back to scoring ways on Tuesday night as already-promoted Coventry City officially clinched the top spot in the EFL Championship.

Wright scored the Sky Blues’ opening goal in an eventual 5-1 home victory over Portsmouth. The result sealed Frank Lampard’s squad the league title with two matches left to play this season.

Wright kicked off the scoring in the 12th minute, powering home a header to finish off Jack Rudoni’s cross. It marked Wright’s 18th goal of the season in all competitions as the American snapped his six-match goal-less drought.

Ephron Mason-Clark doubled the Sky Blues’ lead in the 47th minute before an own goal from Portsmouth’s Regan Poole made it 3-0 to the hosts.

Adrian Segecic pulled a lone consolation back for John Mousinho’s squad but Coventry City would score twice more through Mason-Clark’s second tally and Kaine Kesler-Hayden’s stoppage time insurance goal.

Wright played 75 minutes in the match, moving one goal away from tying his career-best haul for a single campaign.

Coventry City will now aim to eclipse the 90-point mark in Sunday’s home showdown with playoff-chasing Wrexham. The Sky Blues will officially conclude their campaign at Watford on May 2.

  1. It’ll be interesting what Haji does to stay in form. Coventry will be done May 2. There’s a possibility Zendajas could be done this weekend or the 10th of May. The next earliest potential players would be finishing May 15. That could be two full weeks until even half the roster would available. MLS, La Liga, EPL, Serie A will play up until May 24. Roster reveal is May 26. Haji will have almost 3 1/2 weeks between last match and start of camp.
