A closer look at the FIFA World Cup provisional rosters

The bright lights of the 2026 FIFA World Cup are getting ready to turn on and for all 48 participating nations, the provisional rosters for the summer competition are starting to become announced.

Argentina, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Uzbekistan became three of the first national teams to announce their provisional rosters for the tournament ahead of the June 2 official deadline. As more and more teams prepare for their final World Cup tune-ups this month, the list of provisional rosters should continue to grow.

Lionel Messi, Edin Dzeko, and Abdukodir Khusanov were among the headlining names selected to their respective countries’ provisional rosters. Paulo Dybala was among the major snubs after being left off of Argentina’s provisional roster.

FIFA is expected to receive a squad between 35-55 players, with four of those selections being goalkeepers. National Teams will then trim their rosters to between 23-26 players by the June 2 deadline, 10 days before the group stage begins.

A player in the final squad may only be replaced by a player from the provisional squad in the event of a serious injury or illness, no later than 24 hours before their team’s first match at the World Cup. In addition, a goalkeeper in the final squad may be replaced by another goalkeeper from the provisional squad in the event of a serious injury or illness at any time during the tournament.

Rosters will not be considered official until June 2, allowing national teams the opportunity to make changes as needed until then.
