George Bello, Sam Adeniran capture Austrian Cup with LASK

Austrian side LASK ended its 61-year wait to lift a domestic trophy on Friday afternoon.

American players George Bello and Sam Adeniran helped LASK down Rheindorf Altach 4-2 in extra time to win the Austrian Cup for the second time in club history. It marked LASK’s first trophy domestic trophy win since 1964-65.

“This feeling cannot be described, there is nothing more beautiful,” LASK manager Didi Kuhbauer said postmatch. “It’s an incredible story when you win a title again after such a long time and that after this dramaturgy of the game, in which we came back twice after a deficit. This title is also for our fans who have always stood behind us. In the game itself, we already felt the pressure. The victory was finally deserved, but, as we had expected before, a very hard-fought one.

Patrick Greil opened the scoring for Rheindorf Altach after just five minutes but LASK responded through Moses Usor’s equalizer.

Vesel Demaku regained Altach’s lead before halftime, giving them a 2-1 lead at the break.

Adeniran tied the match for LASK in the 66th minute, scoring to force extra time between the two clubs.

Bello delivered the go-ahead goal for LASK in the 101st minute before Adeniran netted his second goal of the match three minutes later to give them a 4-2 cushion.

Altach was later reduced to 10-men, ending any comeback hopes for them.

Bello and Adeniran both went the distance for LASK, logging 120 minutes apiece in a memorable afternoon for them and the club.

LASK will now return to Bundesliga play on May 4 against Rapid Vienna, sitting top of the Championship group. The top-two finishers will seal berths into the UEFA Champions League qualifying round this summer.
