Tournament soccer is only just starting across the country, but one upset has already stolen the show.
Syracuse grabbed the most impressive upset win over the weekend, as the Orange went to Chapel Hill and toppled ACC powerhouse North Carolina, 4-3, in penalty kicks after tying 1-1 through regular time and two 10-minute extra time periods.
An own goal in the 28th minute forced the home side into desperation early, but Tucker Hume scored his 10th goal of the season — a game-tying effort in the 60th minute of play. Neither team could find the breakthrough, and the Orange eventually stormed the field after upsetting the second seed in the ACC tournament. They will play another top team in Clemson on Wednesday, while No. 1 seed Wake Forest will host Notre Dame in the other semifinal matchup.
Meanwhile, Dartmouth was the first team to qualify for the 2015 NCAA College Cup Tournament after defeating Cornell, 2-0, on Saturday. The Ivy League title is the Big Green’s 11th one overall and second in as many seasons.
The Big Ten tournament also kicked off over the weekend, and all four favorites, Indiana, Ohio State, Maryland and Rutgers, advanced to the semifinals. In the Big East, Providence and Xavier advanced to the semifinals. The Friars will face off against Creighton on Thursday, while Georgetown hosts the Musketeers the same day.
