Frankfurt’s Timmy Chandler to undergo knee surgery

Timmy Chandler will be on the sidelines for the early part of Eintracht Frankfurt’s season.

The U.S. international has been dealing with a knee problem during preseason and will officially undergo surgery, the club announced.

Chandler, 28, played in 24 matches for Frankfurt last season scoring two goals and adding four assists. He did feature in several of Frankfurt’s friendlies in the U.S. this summer but was not apart of last weekend’s 4-0 German Super Cup defeat to Bayern Munich.

There is no timetable for Chandler’s return, who stated the pain got worse in recent weeks.

Frankfurt opens their domestic campaign on Saturday against Ulm in the German DFB Pokal. They kick off their Bundesliga season a week from today at SC Freiburg.

  1. I would have liked to think so too, as I’m sure the player would. But I just came across a little item on a site about the Bundesliga transfer market, according to which Frankfurt is looking at picking up Kevin Mbabu from Young Boys because “Timothy Chandler will be out for the long term, so Frankfurt has an urgent need on the right-hand defensive side.”

For some reason I had thought Carlos Salcedo could also cover that position, but apparently he’s only a center back. It does need speed.

Odd that Chandler and Yedlin are both out at the same time. I wish there was a place for both of them – Yedlin’s speed going forward and Chandler’s grit tracking back to defend.

Best wishes to both for a speedy recovery.

  2. Let’s hope it’s just a ‘scope procedure where they clean out any loose cartilage that is causing pain, and Timmy can return sooner rather than later.
