Sunderland winger Lynden Gooch has had a sensational season so far with the Black Cats, helping them to a current second place spot in the EFL League One. Despite not being called into the U.S. Men’s National Team camp for November friendlies, Gooch kept his mind focused as the Black Cats kicked off FA Cup play on Sunday.
Gooch scored the second goal in Sunderland’s 2-1 road win at Port Vale, advancing to the second round of the prestigious tournament.
After a first minute opener by Sunderland, Gooch showed his skill to double their advantage in the 19th minute. The 23-year-old picked up a loose ball at the top of box and turned quickly before rifling a right-footed shot into the bottom-left corner.

It was Gooch’s fourth goal in all competitions this season, which now gives him 10 points in 15 total appearances.
Sunderland would hang on to book a place in the second round, and will find out their next opponent on Monday.
The level of competition he is playing in simply does not warrant a call up, unless he was the absolute standout of the entire league and was leading in goals and assists and was in the running for player of the season which he is not.
You can’t just call up every player in good form. That’s a flawed spectator perspective.
He should’ve been called up. No matter if its the Premier League or the third division, he is scoring and assisting.
Disagree. He needs to be at least in Championship level
Honestly I wish he had of been called up. It could have gave him some exposure against English talent if he got playing time.
“Port Vale Football Club is a professional association football club that competes in League Two, the fourth tier of the English football league system…”

No that much of an accomplishment scoring against a 4th tier team (even Altidore could do that ?? )
He still has 10 points this season, just like Gall has 12 goals in Sweden but people are going to say the competition level isn’t very good. He is still performing well that’s what the team needs
Sunderland has matches over the break. Given that Sunderland is pretty desperate to get back to the Championship they may have asked that Gooch stay with the club. No way to know that of course, but given De la Torre being called and he’s only playing U23s and some Cup matches it makes sense. The other alternative is both Gooch and De la Torre were in camp this Summer perhaps De la Torre was better. I believe Luca replaced the injured Gooch for Ireland and France.
“Points” is a hockey metric. Let’s keep it that way.
MLS used to track “points” until 2005. Of course, they gave 2 pts for a goal so that would give Gooch 4 goals and 7 assists (according to transfermkt) for 15 points.
