Venezia took another important step toward Serie A survival on Sunday, and Gianluca Busio played a key role for newly-promoted club, which earned a precious three points on the road for its fourth win of the campaign.
Busio registered the game-winning assist as Venezia defeated Bologna, 1-0, away from home. It was Venezia’s second-consecutive league victory and its first road win over Bologna since 2000.
The U.S. men’s national team midfielder helped set up the winning goal in the 61st minute when he dribbled into the final third. He directed a pass to spring Nigerian forward David Okereke in on goal, and Okereke slotted the ball into the bottom corner of Lukasz Skorpuski’s net.
It was Busio’s second league assist of the season, to go along with his one goal so far through 12 appearances.
Fellow USMNT midfielder Tanner Tessmann played out the final 30 minutes for Venezia, almost coming close to scoring his first goal for the club. Tessmann’s right-footed shot in the 90th minute was repelled by Skorpuski.
Busio played 80 minutes for Paolo Zanetti’s squad, completing 93% of his passes and making two interceptions.
Venezia is up to 13th in the Serie A table following the victory and will next prepare for a tough showdown on Saturday against Inter Milan.
