Richie Ledezma’s early substitution for Jong PSV on Friday originally looked to be another blow to the young midfielder’s career, but the American returned to training on Monday providing a positive sign going forward.
Ledezma trained individually on Monday just three days after being substituted off only 12 minutes into Jong PSV’s 2-1 loss to NAC Breda. The 22-year-old has suffered several setbacks over the past three years with PSV, causing a halt to his overall development in the Netherlands and his future with the U.S. men’s national team.
“Fortunately, the injury is not too bad,” said PSV manager Ruud Van Nistelrooy, transcribed by Dutch outlet ED. “That is good news for him and for us. Today he was able to work on his recovery again.”
Ledezma joined PSV’s academy in 2018 and since has worked his way up to the first team, totaling 22 appearances for the Eredivsie giants. However, past knee injuries have caused Ledezma to rotate between the first and second teams over the past two seasons, with the American totaling 16 overall appearances this campaign.
Ledezma made three appearances for PSV during the UEFA Europa League group stage this fall.
A former U.S. Under-20 men’s national team standout, Ledezma made his senior debut for the USMNT in 2020, assisting twice in a 6-2 friendly win over Panama.
Jong PSV returns to action on Jan. 16 against VVV-Venlo with Ledezma pushing for an immediate return to the squad.
Personally he should look to getting a loan either in Europe or a loan to a MLS team for this summer. If Ricky Puig and other European players, and young South Americans can come to MLS then some of these Americans can come back home to rejuvenate their careers. Particularly Ledezma, Uly Llanes( who is playing in second division in Austria).
At 22 years old he needs to be playing first team soccer. Time for Ledezma to move on from PSV.
Maybe but it may be worth another season or two to see of he can break in there. Its not like hes had a fair chance at breaking in hes been too injured. Meanwhile where would he likely go to? I say stick it out learn from some of the best in Holland and see if you can make it when fully fit. By end of 2024-25 season leave if not a starter
