Sam Vines played a key role with Belgian side Royal Antwerp before being sidelined and it reportedly looks like the young fullback is on the way back to action.
Vines returned to training with Royal Antwerp, Voetbal Primeur reported Thursday. The American left back suffered a broken leg in early-November, ending his chase to be part of the U.S. men’s national team’s World Cup roster.
The 23-year-old made 20 combined starts for Royal Antwerp this season prior to his injury, scoring one goal and registering two assists. Vines has totaled 50 appearances for the Belgian club following his transfer from the Colorado Rapids in 2021.
He is one of several Royal Antwerp players back in training, joining Pieter Gerkens, Faris Haroun and Davino Verhulst, who have also been out injured.
Vines debuted for the USMNT in a 1-0 victory over Costa Rica in February 2020 and proceeded to make five starts during the Americans’ Gold Cup-winning run in 2021.
Royal Antwerp sits third in the Belgian Pro League standings and also remains in the Belgian Cup competition. Mark Van Bommel’s squad visits Union St. Gilloise in their second leg semifinal showdown in March, facing a 1-0 aggregate deficit.
