Ulysses Llanez’s immediate future with German Bundesliga side Wolfsburg remains undetermined, but Austrian second-tier club SKN St. Poelten is reportedly interested in re-acquiring the American attacker.
SKN St. Poelten is reportedly in talks with Wolfsburg over adding Llanez on loan for the upcoming 2. Liga campaign, Kicker reported Thursday. Llanez, 22, spent the last two seasons with St. Poelten, registering 13 goals and seven assists across 49 combined appearances in the top two divisions in Austria.
A former member of the LA Galaxy academy, Llanez moved to Wolfsburg in July 2019, mainly featuring for the club’s Under-19 team. He scored 11 goals and registered six assists in 16 appearances for Wolfsburg’s U-19 squad, before also spending time with Dutch side Heerenveen on loan.
Llanez originally featured with St. Poelten in the Austrian Bundesliga before the club suffered relegation during the 2021-22 campaign. He continued to develop in the 2. Liga this past season.
His current Wolfsburg contract is set to expire in June 2024. St. Poelten’s domestic schedule gets underway on July 21 against TWL Elektra in the first round of the Austrian Cup.
A former U.S. youth national team standout, Llanez has earned three senior caps for the USMNT to date.
Of that u 20 team Dest, Richards and Weah have been the only real USMNT mainstays. McKenzie has had some caps too. That’s why it seems likely only about three to four from this last cycle will be potential USMNT mainstays. Neal and Cowell have had the most looks/ caps so far. I could see P. Aaronson, and Paredes. And possibly Luna, Wynder, and Caden Clark.
Always hard to predict which young players will actually become really good pros and USMNT quality.
I thought Llanez should have made the move back to MLS two summers ago.
Damn, he’s been in Europe 5 years now and can’t stay with his parent club in the Bundesliga, not good! Age is still on his side however, so hopefully he hits his stride next season and can be a mainstay with Wolfsburg or elsewhere.
I am disappointed in Llanez, I was expecting him to be able to cut it in Europe and be tearing it up. Bundesliga 2 loan to Austria
