American fullback Bryan Reynolds is on his way back to Belgium this summer, but this time on a permanent deal.
Westerlo has acquired Reynolds from AS Roma, signing him until June 2027, the club announced Sunday. The 22-year-old made 34 combined appearances for Westerlo last season, totaling one goal and five assists.
AS Roma will reportedly receive a sell-on fee if Westerlo transfers Reynolds to a club in the future.
Reynolds, a former FC Dallas homegrown signing, made the move to AS Roma back in February 2021. However, Reynolds was reduced to just eight senior appearances for the Serie A club, while also spending time at Belgian side Kortrijk on loan.
A Texas native, Reynolds earned four of his seven U.S. men’s national team caps during the recent Concacaf Gold Cup. The USMNT reached the semifinals before suffering elimination at the hands of Panama in a shootout.
Westerlo finished seventh in the Pro League last season before finishing fourth in the UEFA Conference League Playoff group.
Very good move for him. He will be battling Philly Unions Nathan Harriet for that starting RB spy for the Olympic team.
I think Reynold’s showed he could man that RB spot during the GC, although he wasn’t perfect! Harriet is less of a known quantity at the international level, so I’d think the Pan Am games would be the perfect place for him to get his feet wet and to see how he stacks up against other young, up and coming talent at RB. Furthermore, I don’t see clubs in europe releasing players for the PA Games, so that could give Harriet more of the chance he would need
The Pan American games soccer tournament is being competed by our U19s. I know when it came through we were playing people got excited but US Soccer confirmed later it will be our U19s. I’d guess for the very reason that clubs wouldn’t release older players. As it stands I’m guessing it won’t be the top U19 squad either given club situations. The tournament cutoff is U22s. For example Union aren’t going to release Harriel in the middle of the playoff push. We’re talking guys like Reed Baker-Whiting, Marcos Zambrano, Rodrigo Neri (if Athleti release him), Zach Booth. Maybe Miguel Perez or Kristian Fletcher but both play quite a bit for their MLS clubs.
