Ethan Horvath praised as “good enough to play in Premier League”

Ethan Horvath’s club future remains uncertain with Nottingham Forest set to kick off its new English Premier League campaign in two weeks, but the support of the American goalkeeper remains very certain overall.

Horvath has been part of Forest’s preseason camp, featuring in friendlies against PSV and Leeds United as he continues through his individual preparations. The 28-year-old enjoyed a positive loan spell last season with Luton Town, claiming the No. 1 role for the Hatters and helping them earn promotion back to the English top-flight.

Horvath registered 20 clean sheets (second-most in EFL Championship) in 51 combined appearances for the Hatters, excelling under Rob Edwards during the second half of the season. However, Luton Town did not exercise its purchase option for Horvath this summer, leaving the U.S. men’s national team keeper in a tough position going forward.

Chris Cohen, a former assistant coach at Nottingham Forest, voiced his opinion on Horvath’s current situation, praising the veteran goalkeeper on his overall growth at the position.

“He deserves an opportunity to play in the Premier League,” Cohen said in a club interview, transcribed by Luton Today. I can’t believe Luton don’t want him. He’s a wonderful professional and he’s good enough to play in the Premier League.”

James Shea and Matt Macey are among the candidates to start for Luton Town this season, unless a dramatic late move is completed for re-acquire Horvath on a permanent deal. Horvath meanwhile, remains a Nottingham Forest player, but could be on the way out with Dean Henderson and Matt Turner both linked as potential acquisitions for Steve Cooper’s squad.

Horvath’s production last season speaked for itself and with his former assistant coach supporting him for a long-term future in the Premier League, it might not be long before the Colorado native finds a new home this summer.

Nottingham Forest opens its Premier League campaign on August 12 against Arsenal.

  1. I am more concerned about Dest they are saying Barcelona might cancel his contract and fire him. That’s is no bueno 🤦‍♂️.

    • I actually look at it as an opposite. No worries about transfer fees if he becomes a free agent. I didn’t think he looked very good in the limited preseason I saw him play. He clearly needs to feel comfortable to play well and that isn’t happening at Barca or AC Milan.

      • it’s a tad more complicated than you folks are making it out to be. i understand his fee coming in to barca was >20m. i assume part of the issue here is despite having no interest in him staying, they probably slapped a heavy sticker price on the kid like he’s amazing. as is so often the case. and part of the game here may be that barca, despite its financial problems, wants to maintain its resale prices. i seriously doubt dest actually has “no offers.” what is more likely true is whatever absurd 20-25m sticker they slapped on him is what is not getting a response. but they want that number to be “what barca sells for” so bad they are willing to instead literally pay dest to leave. which is what “termination” really means, is buy out. because i would assume if he’s in camp now he has a deal in force, either for a few more years or any option this year was long ago triggered.

so they have to cut him a check to go this other path. which might help explain why barca has money issues.
maybe it’s an MBA thing to assume people offer fair prices and respond to market signals. “oh, my widget isn’t selling at $20? let’s try $15.” here they would rather pay him $5? $10? so they would feel they had the reputation their widgets sell at $20.

      • Mr. Voice,

“it’s a tad more complicated than you folks are making it out to be. ”

        Not that complicated for Dest.

Dest for X amount of money can do Y.

        1. Is Y good enough for your team?
        2. Can you find someone to do Y as well, or better, for less money?

If Sergino can satisfy #1 he has a chance to stay. If not he’s gone, regardless.
If Barca can succeed with #2 then Sergino is gone or reduced to backup if they can afford him there.

All Dest has to worry about is to play his best game ever as consistently as possible going forward.

After that everything else will take care of itself either at Barca or elsewhere

  2. i’d take this the exact opposite direction. he has struggled so long to get starting minutes. he found them in the c’ship. find another taker that level. few seasons like that and maybe he gets signed to EPL to start and not as a cup game keeper. last thing he needs is stuck back on a bench. now, to be clear, <1 GAA last year, yeah, he could probably hack the right EPL job. is that the chase he needs? cause GB is back in charge and he punishes people for sitting.

i personally hoped we'd use recent NT games to trial some other options because seanjohn is older and a lot of these younger options are flawed. we then saw turner every game but one, which while effective is not helpful to shaping the full roster.

fwiw when i raised this before i got an abstracted lecture about how cohen and other keepers needed to be back for european preseason. turns out cohen was not "getting ready for UCL qualification with maccabi" but in fact out of deal as of 7/1 and a free agent. likewise gaga is rumored to be headed out of CFC on loan.

    • Yeah somehow I missed Cohen’s contract expired. That he doesn’t have a job this close to the season and many of the leagues that would be stepping stones are already started might tell you something.

Everyone knew Gaga was going on loan, who thought he was beating out Kepa?

      • might tell me what??? he was their keeper opening day and he was still starting when the season ended. had <1 GAA in his league. the sheer amount of blue and green on his league games on TM says they rarely lost league when he played. his social media still reflect a team relationship. so my bet is either contract hardball or seeing if he can upgrade, not that he couldn't hack israel.

you're missing my point which is we had various keepers who could use a boost and we handed turner almost all the time, gave the one day off to a guy well into his 30s, and sent cohen away.

      • What it tells you is teams aren’t overly excited about a GK from the Israeli league. I’m sure Cohen and his agent are trying to get a new job in a better league but so far haven’t been able to find a good situation (and the season has already started in mid-level leagues). It’s hard to rate a GK on a team in a lower level league that usually the club has significantly more talent than the rest of their league. Does he have good numbers because he’s good or because his team always has the ball and doesn’t give many chances? Scouts and the USMNT have looked at his tape and have a much better idea about his qualities than you or I. I’m not sure 180 minutes vs Trinidad or St Kitts changes that.

      • Mr. Voice,

“you’re missing my point which is we had various keepers who could use a boost and we handed turner almost all the time, gave the one day off to a guy well into his 30s, and sent cohen away.”

If the USMNT thought that Cohen had a future with them then maybe they try to “boost him” .

You’ve heard of “voting with your feet”? It seems like they don’t think much of Cohen.

Gaga could stand going on loan, or maybe being sold. That kid is a long way from being a worthy Chelsea #1. He’s certainly not USMNT senior team material right now.

If Matt goes down, right now it doesn’t matter who they replace him with, Cohen, Zach, Sean, Gaga, Ethan, fill in the blank.

I’m sure they can all do a passable job at replacing him for a game or two. Longer than that?

        I don’t think it matters.

    • ” maybe he gets signed to EPL to start and not as a cup game keeper. last thing he needs is stuck back on a bench. now, to be clear,”

He’s already signed by an EPL team but they don’t seem to want him. Forest are relegation bait. If Ethan can’t start for that crappy team why would any Other EPL team sign him as a starter?

“1 GAA last year, yeah, he could probably hack the right EPL job. is that the chase he needs?

Luton thought so much of his <1GAA that they cut him. Maybe he's not that good or maybe Luton are already cutting salary before they get relegated, getting an early start on lightening the payroll. and will be "planning" for the 2024-25 season in the Championship. Why Ethan is unemployed is irrelevant.

What is relevant is Ethan is unemployed.

"cause GB is back in charge and he punishes people for sitting."

Ethan's #1 priority is not the USMNT. He's unemployed and needs a job. Fuck Gregg. Ethan's calling card so far with the USMNT is that he's great off the bench. Ethan has to prove he's a consistent season long #1 at the Top level. He hasn't proved that yet.

      • Friendly reminder Vacqui -Horvath isn’t unemployed, he just isn’t a starter for Nottingham. He’s still on Forest’ payroll. He wants starting minutes. He helped get Forest and now Luton Town into the EPL.

      • “Friendly reminder Vacqui -Horvath isn’t unemployed, he just isn’t a starter for Nottingham.”

You’re correct, of course. But Ethan really needs to think about where to go from here.

Horvath is the bridesmaid, never the bride.
How many times do Forest have to tell Ethan that he’s only their guy if no one else can play?

He’s not the young keeper at Brugge waiting his turn anymore. He’s 27 and not old for a keeper but not a kid anymore.

Forest tells you that he now he has the label, permanent backup.
Of course injuries happen but you can’t count on that.

I would think he wants to change that label if only to maximize his earning potential during what little time he has left to him to make bigger money. Or maybe he’s happy as a backup. It’s reasonable money, and not a bad career at all.

Either that or begin working on his post playing career.

If he wants to go for starter money, maybe he should take the hint before they cut him and he is really unemployed.
