Houston Dynamo downs Inter Miami to win 2023 U.S. Open Cup

The Houston Dynamo defied the odds on Wednesday night, walking into DRV PNK Stadium and leaving with its second U.S. Open Cup title in club history.

Ben Olsen’s squad used first-half goals from Griffin Dorsey and Amine Bassi to claim a 2-1 road victory over Inter Miami. The result continued a positive 2023 campaign for Ben Olsen’s squad, who will enter the 2024 Concacaf Champions League next year.

Tata Martino’s side sorely missed veteran stars Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba, who both sat out due to respective injuries.

Dorsey delivered the opening goal for the Dynamo, capping off a fast break with a confident finish. Artur’s pass allowed Dorsey to sneak down the right wing before unleashing a powerful effort into the roof of Drake Callender’s net.

It marked Dorsey’s second goal of the season across all competitions.

The Dynamo doubled their lead in the 33rd minute as Bassi stepped up and slotted home for a 2-0 lead. Veteran defender DeAndre Yedlin brought down Nelson Quinones in the box, allowing the Frenchman to score his 12th goal of the season.

Andrew Tarbell made three saves in the second half for the Dynamo, keeping them in front for the remainder of the match. He denied Ben Cremaschi and Facundo Farias from cutting the deficit in half before also repelling Leonardo Campana’s header in stoppage time.

Josef Martinez pulled one goal back for the Herons with three minutes to play, but overall that was the closest that Inter Miami got to a comeback.

The Dynamo held on to capture their first trophy since 2018 and their fourth overall as a professional franchise.

Both teams resume MLS play this weekend in their search for a spot in the MLS Cup Playoffs.

  1. Only reason they won was because Messi was injured. Very painful to be best player on the team, can’t play, and win the cup due to injury.

  2. Messi and his bud Alba aside …

Did anyone else think Houston looked _surprisingly_ good?

Really quick play, really snappy passing, good ball control. Not, actually, what I’m used to seeing in MLS — but all the better. Hache Hache, well done.

Perhaps a reason behind Wayne Rooney’s original choice to play for Olsen in D.C.? Can Houston compete this year?
