Liga MX side Tigres became the first team to lift the Campeones Cup twice in its history after defeating reigning MLS Cup winners Los Angeles FC on Wednesday night.
Nahuel Guzman made two penalty-kick saves as Tigres defeated LAFC 5-3 in a shootout after the teams played out a goal-less draw through 90 minutes. Timothy Tillman and Ryan Hollingshead were denied from the penalty spot while Tigres went a perfect 5-for-5 on its spot kick opportunities.
Luis Quinones was denied by Maxime Crepeau in the opening 15 minutes as Tigres started the match on the front foot. However, LAFC would begin knocking on the door as the match went on.

LAFC was reduced to 10-men after the hour mark as Diego Palacios received a second yellow card in the 63rd minute. Tigres almost took advantage shortly after as Andre-Pierre Gignac and Diego Lainez both were denied by Crepeau on back-to-back chances.
Rafael Carioca was sent off for Tigres in the 85th minute after being showed a red card for his foul on Bouanga. However, LAFC could not find a winning goal as both teams headed to a shootout.
Tillman was denied by Guzman in the second round of the shootout before Hollingshead’s right-footed effort was also repelled by the veteran shot-stopper.

Jesus Angulo slotted home his successful penalty kick as Tigres walked away as winners of the comptition.
Bouanga scored, but it was called back because Chiellini kicked a restart while the ball was moving (he actually played it twice). While it had no impact on the play leading up to the goal that ensued, that silly error cost LAFC winning the game in regulation.
Disappointing that it wasn’t even broadcasted in the US, apparently.
