Daryl Dike’s latest injury is just as bad as originally feared.
Dike has been ruled out for the remainder of 2024 due to a torn Achilles tendon, the club announced Monday. The U.S. men’s national team forward suffered the injury on Saturday after playing only 10 minutes in the Baggies 2-2 EFL Championship draw with Ipswich Town.
Dike was visibly upset as he was carted off the pitch at Portman Road. His latest injury marks his second Achilles tear since April 2023.
“A rupture of the USA international’s left Achilles will require surgery, followed by a period of rehabilitation,” West Brom said in a club statement. “The club will provide Daryl with all the care and support he needs to return to full fitness later this year.”
Dike suffered his first Achilles injury last April, which forced him to miss the remainder of the 2022-23 campaign and the first half of the current league season. The former Orlando City and Barnsley striker made his season debut against Aldershot Town in FA Cup play last January, scoring once in the match.
After positive spells at both Orlando City and Barnsley, Dike has endured a frustrating time at West Brom over two-and-a-half seasons. He has been reduced to only 32 appearances, in which he’s tallied eight goals.
Dike’s absence is a major blow to not only West Brom, but also for the USMNT.
The USMNT faces Jamaica in the CONCACAF Nations League semifinals this March before beginning involvement in the Copa America this summer.
Cruel.
Really tough for him. But I don’t know if it’s a major blow for the USMNT. Striker isn’t much of a worry. I also think the u23’s will be fine. One of Sargent, Pepi or Balogun may be on that Olympic team as well as Mcguire and you can throw Cade Cowell or even add Ferreira in the mix for striker for the Olympic team too.
But you hate to see this for Dike
Ugh
