Weston McKennie shines before suffering dislocated shoulder in Juventus win

Weston McKennie delivered one of his best performances of the season for Serie A side Juventus before ending the match with worry over his immediate future.

McKennie registered two assists in Sunday’s 3-2 league victory over Frosinone, keeping the Old Lady in the Scudetto title race. However, the U.S. men’s national team midfielder’s day ended before the 90-minute mark due to an apparent dislocated shoulder.

The 25-year-old’s low cross in the third minute was slotted home by Dusan Vlahovic for a 1-0 Juventus lead. Frosinone though would battle back in the first half to flip the match in its favor before the half hour mark.

Walid Cheddira’s equalizer came in the 14th minute before Marco Brescianini’s go-ahead goal came 13 minutes later for the visitors.

McKennie and Vlahovic connected for the second time in the match, forcing Juventus level in the 32nd minute. It marked McKennie’s first multi-assist match of the campaign, continuing a positive overall season in Turin.

Despite losing McKennie before the final whistle, the Old Lady would use a stoppage-time winner from Daniele Rugani to steal three points at home.

McKennie led all players with six chances created while also winning five duels and drawing two fouls. His recent injury though is a worry, especially with the USMNT’s CONCACAF Nations League semifinal vastly approaching in mid-March.

Juventus will hope to have McKennie back for its March 3 trip to Napoli in league play next weekend.

  1. Ugh. No McKennie for nations league then, leaving Pulisic as our only top attacker in really good form. Sargent maybe. Reyna, Weah, Aaronson haven’t been playing starter minutes. If we had a flexible coach you would think we might try a 2 striker setup since Sargent is on fire and Balogun and Pepi are both healthy and have scored recently.

    • huh? There are several attackers in good form….Pepi(albeit always off the bench but no one can argue bc he keeps scoring whenever given minutes), Sargent(as you noted), Haji Wright and Brandon Vazquez down in Liga MX

    • McKennie has been far and away the US player in best form. Pulisic’s numbers are good but if he was in McKennie-type form he’d have double the goals and even more assists not to mention way less turnovers and lost duels.

  2. Dislocated shoulders may need surgery, or just rest. Depends on severity. At least it is better than an injury to a knee or the leg. Hope he recovers quickly, we will need him.

    • “we will need him.”

For Copa America sure but to win the Nation’s League?
      I don’t think so.
If we do we’re a lot worse off than I thought.

Juve need him much more than Gregg does right now.

  3. Not so sure about “firmly in the scudetto race”… Inter’s flying away with it sadly. But yeah McKennie was absolutely great today.
