Weah, McKennie, Juventus eliminated from Champions League

Juventus looked set to book its spot into the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 on Wednesday until a late collapse cost the Serie A side.

Tim Weah scored his first career UCL goal, but Thiago Motta’s squad lost 3-1 in second leg action at PSV. The Dutch club advanced 4-3 on aggregate after a 98th minute winner from Ryan Flamingo.

Ivan Perisic boosted Peter Bosz’s men in front after 53 minutes, but Weah would tie the match 10 minutes later with a thundering strike. It marked Weah’s sixth goal of the season across all competitions, giving him 10 goal contributions for the club this campaign.

Ismael Saibari’s close-range finish in the 74th minute tied the match on aggregate and forced the two clubs to go extra time.

A frantic series in the Juventus box in the 98th minute allowed Flamingo to slot home the eventual deciding goal. Flamingo earned Man of the Match honors after logging a strong 120 minutes at the Phillips Stadion.

Weah played 90 minutes in the match while U.S. men’s national team teammate Weston McKennie logged the full 120. Richie Ledezma played 78 minutes at right back for PSV.

Juventus will return to Serie A play on Sunday against Cagliari while PSV hosts Go Ahead Eagles in KNVB Cup action on February 26.

  1. The “underdog” Dutch teams moving on while the Serie A squads heading home…AC Milan really is a team with talent and no leadership….Theo, well that needs no explanation…Leao, for all his talent, is way too 50/50 on which version will show up….The fastest man on the field toying with defenders, or unfortunately, the now too common terrible touch, disinterested, no defensive help version which happened at the worst time. That left side of the field is the big weak link. And then the coach pulls Pulisic and Gimenez who have great work rates on both ends. They are trying to preserve Pulisic as he’s not 100% fit but the man could’ve gone longer. Definitely a big problem with this team.

  2. While I get Weah at RB for Juve because of injuries, his talent is being wasted there. He has been better than all of Juves attackers this season.

” his talent is being wasted there.”

      No it isn’t.

“He has been better than all of Juves attackers this season.”

Those Juve attackers don’t suck in isolation. Timo as a winger would not have Timo as his right or left back.

Weah’s minutes on the field are not what they could be mostly because he’s brittle.

And when he is healthy, he plays as much as he has because of his versatility.
And it was his idea in the first place . He volunteered for fullback duty way back when he was with Lille because he couldn’t get arrested.

He’s a good winger but he’s not a top flight winger. Or a top flight striker. He can be great for a couple of games in either role, which is useful for a national team, but he has not shown that he can do that for the long haul, for Lille or Juve, over the course of a season.

      He’s not CP.

That’s the difference between the club game and the national team game.
The national team is more like a bunch of one night stands while the club game is more like a marriage.

At Juve Timo is a top flight swiss army knife. And in combo with Weston, they give Motta a lot of desirable options.

Motta is not stupid, he’s not anti American or any of the other excuses USMNT fans use against coaches who do not see our guys the same way they do. Most of all he works for Juve, not the USMNT. Juve are not paid to develop players for the USMNT.

If Juve thought they were better with Timo as a winger they would play him there all the time. And maybe someday they will. More to the point if Timo thought he was better off as an exclusive winger right now then you think he would make a stink about it. But it seems like he’s chill rotating like this. For now. It could add years to his career.

      • Please give me the stats of Gonzales, Conciecao, Yildez?

Weah isn’t world class? Yeah I know i never said he was. And nor are the rest of those wingers.. Yes his takent being wasted at RB. Once injuries Sunnyside I woukd expect Weah to be moved back to wing. It’s his best position.

Here are the stats of those other three this season:

Gonzales; 2 goals in all comps, 3 assists in all comps

Conciecao: 5 goals, 4 assists all comps.

Yildiz;: 6 golas, 3 assists all comps.

Weah: 6 goals, 4 assists in all comps.

While Weah being benched for these guys, and being moved around positions. I would argue that Weah has been the far more consistent attacker all season. And deserves far more respect than he gets.

Says who? The term “World Class” is meaningless garbage. Timmy Weah, at PSG, Lille, and now Juve has been unable to convince any manager that he deserves to be a season long starter as a winger, a #9 or any position. You can look that up.

“Here are the stats of those other three this season:

Can you prove that he would have those stats if he had played at RW all season? What makes you say he was being benched FOR these guys?

He has 17 appearances in Serie A so far. 11 were starts and he subbed in 6 times.

When healthy and able to play he was only listed as benched TWICE. For what it is worth Transfermarkt has him listed as a MF 2 times, a 1CF 2 times, a RB 3 times and a RW 7 times.

In the Champions League he had 9 appearances starting 5 times and subbing in 4 times.

For what it is worth Transfermarkt has him listed as a CF 1 time, a RW 3 times, a RB 3 times , and 2 incompletes ( appearances so short, I guess they weren’t sure how to label him).
Again you can look all this up if you have a computer.

What these stats tell me is that Motta wants Timo playing as much as possible.

“And deserves far more respect than he gets.”

Nonsense. Juve give him the kind of respect that matters the most to him. When he is healthy, most of the time, they play him. The stats suggest that, when he is healthy, Motta wants him on the field no matter what. If that’s disrespect, then bring it on because our guys can use as much of it as possible. This is by far Timo’s best season since he broke into PSG’s first team. He’s not at CP’s level ( Christian could be a pretty decent left back too) but maybe he’s on his way there.

Timmy is 24 but is finally looking like he is beginning to learn the greatest skill of all, the ability to get on the field and stay on it for the long run.

Christian looks like he’s figured it out. Tyler, (fingers crossed) might be there if he can finish the season strong. Gio, Josh, Haji, Dest, Malik, Pepi, Richie etc, should all be paying close attention. Look at Musah. Milan seems to want him on the field somewhere, no matter what. Weston started out like that and look at him now.

It’s very hard to convince any manager/team that they are better with you on the field playing if you are not on the field playing regardless of the so-called position.

By the way, Juve only lists two other RB’s , Savona and Costa, both 21. I notice these Euro coaches are not as precious about position titles like USMNT fans are.

Also tradition matters; before Weah, Juve had a guy named Juan Cuadrado. Again, look him up.

Bosz at PSV has been playing my guy Richie , an alleged creative attacking MF at Sergino’s right back slot all season long. JR says Richie can’t play right back and I don’t doubt JR but playing RB in 6 games in the Champions League and 15 in the Eredivisie , I guess Richie must be doing something right.

  3. Wow…..PSV beat Juventus……without Tillman…..Sergino Dest …..or Pepi (AND WITH LUUK DE JONG ON THE FIELD (that like playing a man down lol)
    Damn…..

    • Milan were on their way to boat-racing them, until Theo Hernandez decided to earn himself one of the most pointless red cards I’ve ever seen…and then AC Milan, for whatever inexplicable reason, decided to double down on the dumb and pull Christian Pulisic instead of Joao Felix. Even with a man down for almost a full half, Milan still dominated possession and opportunities and really should have won, but the winning goal just would not come. Bad luck, bad tactics, bad personal decisions by players…Milan had all that and then some, and duly snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. It was exactly the sort of stinker that gets fans staring with narrow slitted eyes at their coach, and I can’t imagine Pulisic is a happy camper right about now.

That one’s going to linger for awhile.

    • Bosz actually started his most creative available lineup with Lange and Saibari. It’s really been Tillman they’ve been missing the most. Gus Til is a good player but he can’t set himself or anyone else up. PSV has been giving up over 2g per match since Christmas, to only score one off a Weah golazo says a lot about Juve’s offense.
