Report: Klinsmann in ‘power struggle’ over technical director role

In recent months, Jurgen Klinsmann has experienced his share of struggles as U.S. Men’s National Team head coach. Now, it appears that those struggles have reportedly extended to his overarching role with U.S. Soccer.

Sports Illustrated reported Wednesday that Klinsmann is in a “power struggle” regarding his role as U.S. Soccer’s technical director. The report states that U.S. Soccer’s chief commercial director Jay Berhalter, brother of Columbus Crew head coach Gregg, has taken a more hands-on approach over the past year regarding day-to-day operations.

Berhalter, who reportedly called a meeting in August without Klinsmann in attendance, is reportedly not on great terms with Klinsmann. SI states that it was told that the relationship between the two is “not good.”

However, U.S. Soccer denied any rift between the two parties.

“Any perception that there’s a power struggle is simply false,” a U.S. Soccer spokesman told SI. “Everyone is working collectively to improve the technical side on a daily basis.”

A U.S. Soccer spokesman also refuted a claim in the SI report that head athletic trainer Sue Falsone was fired by Klinsmann. According to U.S. Soccer, the two sides mutually agreed to part ways at the end of Falsone’s contract after a year of working together.

What do you think of the reports? What should U.S. Soccer do to best handle technical development?

If Klinsmann would have used the 3rd sub on the fresher legs of an attacking player while we were in need of a goal to get to a draw we wouldn’t even be having this conversation. Johnson would have had to sit and be assessed and either continue or sit outside the field of play leaving us a man down. There is no way that the original game plan included playing for 120 minutes using only 2 subs and then subbing the goal keeper when you get to PKs. Poor planning and lack of vision. #FireKlinsmann

  2. Well, because we lost the comments from before the switch over in formats, now we’ll never know if we would have reached the 200 comments that someone predicted.

  3. Given the poor run of results from every level of US Soccer, it would be very surprising if Klinsmann ‘s job performance was not questioned.

Given the power Klinsmann’s supporters have in US soccer, describing the questioning as a power struggle is fair enough.

    • I don’t care what his winning percentage was we have so much talent now that we can beat anyone in the world. We should at least make the quarterfinals in every World Cup. Last World Cup is a failure if we can’t even beat teams like Portugal or Belgium than we’ll never be taken seriously. This team would be so much better if Mourino, Guardiola, Schmid, or Kreis was in charge.

  5. We need to get rid of that German Fuerher now I don’t care if Landon was fat and only trained once a week he is Landon Donovan and he gets to play for the USMNT whenever he wants. If it wasn’t for that kraut Landon would still be on the team and we wouldn’t lose to teams like Mexico. The USMNT should be able to at least make the quarterfinals every World Cup and Klinsmann should have been fired after the last one this is ridiculous. Mourino, Guardiola, Schmid, or Kreis would all do a much better job and would turn this team around. We are one of the most talented teams in the world and we should be able to play offensive soccer we just need a decent coach.
