SBI MLS Rookie of the Week: Jonathan Campbell

Chicago Fire head coach Veljko Paunovic was impressed with his defenders after holding the Columbus Crew to a goose egg over the weekend, but a rookie in the center of his three-man back line arguably turned in the best shift on Saturday.

Jonathan Campbell started his second game of the year for the Fire, and helped the club earn their first shutout of the season against the 2015 MLS Cup runners-up. His performance in keeping the Crew’s dynamic attack in check for 90 minutes earned him honors as SBI MLS Rookie of the Week.

Crew forward Kei Kamara, who scored 22 goals during the regular season last year, was not able to put a single shot on frame vs. the Fire in Week 3. Campbell, a main reason why Kamara was unable to find a breakthrough, was strong around the box, making four clearances and one tackle. He also added three interceptions in his third appearance of the year.

The 22-year-old centerback beat out teammate Brandon Vincent, Philadelphia Union defender Keegan Rosenberry and Toronto FC forward Tsubasa Endoh for this week’s honors.

What do you think of Campbell’s performance? Agree with SBI’s pick? Which rookie stood out the most to you?
