D.C. United was unable to earn a single win for the first five weeks of the 2016 MLS season, but that all changed on Saturday.

DCU defeated Western Conference contenders Vancouver Whitecaps in emphatic fashion, scoring four goals while earning its second shutout of the season. The 4-0 victory in the nation’s capital earned D.C. United honors as SBI MLS Team of the Week.

Fabian Espindola and Alvaro Saborio each scored two goals at RFK Stadium, while the D.C. United defense held the Whitecaps to only one shot on goal. In total, D.C. United outshot its opponents 24-7 on the day. Other members who contributed to DCU’s first win of the season include Luciano Acosta, who assisted Saborio’s two late goals, Patrick Nyarko and Steve Birnbaum. The 25-year-old centerback was efficient moving the ball around, completing 87 percent of his passes, won four aerial battles and successfully made three tackles to anchor D.C. United’s back line.

DCU beat out Sporting Kansas City and the Philadelphia Union for this week’s SBI MLS Team of the Week honors.
