Colorado Rapids at Kansas City Wizards: Your Running Commentary

Kansas_city_logo2007_016

The battle of the MLS unbeatens will take place today in Kansas City, Kansas. Okay, so maybe that’s a little bit of hyperbole, but there is no mistaking that both the Kansas City Wizards and Colorado Rapids enjoyed dream starts to their seasons last week.

Both teams scored shutout victories at home and now the Wizards play host to the Rapids with a chance to jump out in front of the pack in the Eastern Conference. The Rapids will be hoping to do the same in the Western Conference.

The match is scheduled for 5 p.m. ET, a change brought about by the fact that Kansas will be playing in the NCAA Final Four tonight. No matter, the Wizards should still have a lively crowd at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.

What match-ups will I be watching for today? The Christian Gomez-Kerry Zavagnin battle and Terry Cooke-Michael Harrington match-ups should be especially fun to watch. I predicted a Kansas City victory on ESPN.com and am sticking to that one here.

If you will be watching the match today, please feel free to share your thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below. I know there are plenty of non-Wizards and non-Rapids fans who will be interested in this one.

Enjoy the match.

  1. The announcer should at least be able to tell the difference between the two teams- other than being a homer, that is.

  2. “If they don’t get a stadium, y’all reckon they move to Montreal?”

My guess would be cross state to Saint Louis. That would leave places like Montreal, Vegas, New York II, etc still in the mix for new teams.

  3. Yikes, attendance today is 8731. Wizards need to increase the pressure in Jefferson City to get that state funding ASAP!

  4. Although playing at Community America Ballpark has to feel a little amateurish, it sure is an improvement over Arrowhead.

  5. The fact that he’s totally having a ball calling this game is totally making this game worth watching when it gets ugly.

  6. Sportscaster has now said both “My bad.” and “That was lame.”

    Which is totally refreshing.

I’m digging the combo of inexperience and shameless homerism. It makes watching the game kinda fun.

  7. WTF? A real game broke out in this match. Who are these guys? What have they done with the Crapids? Memo to Clavijo: don’t bring back any more injured players; this is working…

Also, despite the two Colorado goals, the KC defense is looking at times like it did a few years ago when it was among the stingyist in the league.

The announcer is kinda fun to listen to in a regional cable newscaster kind of way.

  8. Jimmy Conrad you can’t stop him you can only hope to contain him. And that too is obviously beyond the ability of the Rapids.

2 headed goals in three minutes.

But before I could even type this Burciaga pulled one back.

Talk about a dull game coming to life 2-1 KC in 59th.

  9. Direct Kick works great.

For Colorado Labrocca looks pretty good. Out of Rutgers and a New Jersey product. Never herd of him before. Apparently has had some stints with US youth teams.

  10. Looks like it’s up now. It also looks like a step up in camera work from last week in KC. Still not great, but a step up.

I need Gomez and Lopez to play well for my fantasy team. Otherwise, I don’t care about these specific teams. Love the MLS, but these teams aren’t big on my personal radar.
