Another key U.S. women’s national team player is on her way to England’s WSL.
Sam Coffey has joined Manchester City in a permanent move from NWSL side Portland Thorns, both clubs announced. Coffey signed a four year deal with the English club through 2029.
“It’s a club with so much history, so much success, so much influence in the city,” Coffey said about joining Manchester City in a club interview. “Manchester is not somewhere I’ve been before, but there’s something about it that I felt I was led to and called to.
“I think it’s also a place that just has proven it’s investment in women’s soccer and being a part of this movement that is going on. Seeing the facilities, the support the team gets and all the efforts they are putting in for the women’s side is such a huge and positive side and something I’m honoured to be a part of.”
After playing collegiately at both Boston College and Penn State, Coffey then made the move to the NWSL with Portland. She helped the Thorns win the NWSL Championship in her debut season while also earning Best XI honors in 2022, 2023, and 2025.
Coffey made 90 appearances for the Thorns over four years, in addition to her 42 caps for the USWNT. She’s scored nine combined goals for club and country, while also winning a Gold Medal with Team USA at the 2024 Olympic Games.
The 27-year-old also helped the USWNT win the SheBelieves Cup and CONCACAF W Gold Cup in 2024, as well as the CONCACAF Women’s Championship in 2022.
Man City currently leads the WSL this season with 33 points earned in 12 matches. She is now the sixth current USWNT player in the WSL and the fourth to play for the Citizens’ women’s team.
