D.C. United fans don’t need to be reminded how tough it has been for their club to get results at Real Salt Lake. It is one of the more frustrating developments of the past two seasons considering how much better D.C. has been than RSL.
This time around, Real Salt Lake is an improved team that has shown good flashes early on. Can RSL take advantage of a tired D.C. United team that just got knocked out of Champions Cup action at mid-week? Can the rebuilt Real Salt Lake defense contain the dangerous D.C. attack?

OH DC, OH DC, you’ve got bigger problems then the US military!!
I am with you Sean, but its looking bad for his return. If he does come back, the team will have already found their new identity and style without him.
MiamiAl, ben olsen is the true team captain. you can say what you want about Jaime Moreno (and don’t get me wrong, I love him to death), but ben olsen is the biggest leader on that team. without him, we’re just kind of stumbling around trying to keep the ball out of the net. so basically, not coming back is not even an option for him. we NEED him.
What a strange game I love. RSL did not string bunches of passes together like in previous games, however a more spartan direct approach results in goals scored. It was not perfect but there was not a game changing mistake which have plagued RSL.
Also good to see, Kreis made the correct subs. Andy gave RSL more possession, Espindola ran himself out and Findley’s speed help disrupt DCU (too bad his first touch is so heavy), and Joy was showing signs again of not closing down the left and Beltran came and provided the coverage needed to maintain the shut out.
Kreis post game comments make it sound like gaffer will not let the team get too confident against team starting a pissed off Jeff Cunningham looking to pay back RSL over and over again.
A much deserved and needed victory for RSL. If they would have lost it would have left everything thinking that RSL is in for the same lousy season. They dominated the game from start to finish. You have to love what the Argentines are doing to. The back line of Ian Joy, Nat Borchers, Matias Mantilla, and Chris Wingert looks formidable. Javier Morales looks like the play maker they’ve been desperately needing in the front end. They go 3 to 4 deep now in good strikers (Kenny Deuchar who is a big threat on any set piece, Robby Findley, and Fabian Espindola. Kyle Beckerman played like the player everyone was hoping he’d be. Finally it look like RSL played like they have the advantage on that turf field (which they should). Great game for them, and I expect positive results in Toronto next week too.
I say forget about Ben Olsen. He is done…His comments show that he truly is discouraged about his propects of returning…Hopefully McTavish can fill that fiesty “fly in the ointment” role that Benny plays…
RSL finished their chances, their defense was rock solid. Sturgis played really well as a defensive midgfielder, Bourcher was an animal in the back, Beckerman is going to be an allstar this year. I have said since the first game of the year, that if this team gels and finishes the chances they get, they are going to be a team to be reckoned with. They gelled today and finished their chances although they could have had 2 more goals easily.
Looks like Ives was right – DC always has trouble in Salt Lake.
For anyone who cares, I’m throwing in comments on the Columbus-Chivas game on my TiVo’ed copy of the game (I was at the game, and TiVo’ed it to see it once I got home).
Yeah DC got pounded. RSL will do really well this year. I mean the first 2 games weren’t telling. They ended up with 5 new starters and they need game experience together. Now lets see them go out on the road and finish their chances.
Something’s up with Olsen’s ankle. I read an interview with him in the Washington Post’s website, I think. He was very discouraged. Anyone remember when he missed around 1 1/2 years with another ankle injury?
RSL 4 DC 0
Wow, I didn’t see this coming at all. What a weird weekend of football.
They looked dreadful. Of course starting the first string might have helped. They REALLY miss Ben Olson. And, the manager – not very strong.
Wow, 3:0 Real Salt Lake. I have to say, they are the ones looking like a young and interesting and technical team at the moment. For some reason, for the 2nd year in a row, DC United is starting out of the gate very slow and not on the same page.
The goalie is someone knew they signed in he off season from Peru. He was expected to start, but Wells got the nod.
Tommy Soehn using a 343 when the defense is already suspect? And the second stringers? No wonder he is behind 2 to 0. I really have to question his coaching ability. Granted, some of the players played Wednesday but start them in their normal formation (the one that won on Wednesday) and then replace them as their legs give out. And who the heck is that goalie?
DC not starting Gallardo.
RSL up 2-0. Great week for my fantasy team.
