Tournament scoring leader Sydney Leroux notched her fifth goal of the tournament to help give the U.S. Under-20 women's national a 1-0 victory against Germany in the Under-20 World Cup semifinals in Chile on Thursday.

Leroux finished off a Nikki Washington cross from close range for the only score of the match. U.S. goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher made two saves for the shutout, helping set up a U-20 final match-up on Sunday against North Korea, which scored a 2-1 victory against France in the other semifinal.

If that final sounds familiar it is because the United States faced North Korea in the Under-17 World Cup final just last month. North Korea won that final, 2-1, in overtime.

What do you think of the result? Have you been following the tournament? Do you think the Americans can knock off North Korea? Will we see some fake photos of Kim Jong Il celebrating if North Korea wins again?

  1. Thanks Ives for bringing some attention to the women’s side. I follow both the USMNT and USWNT, so it’s good to see the women get some prop’s on this site, too. I have been following both the U17 and U20 women’s tournaments. You can watch both the games (live) and the goals / highlights at FIFA.com TV for free (at least where I live in continental Europe).

On the U-20 women’s side, I have been impressed with Naeher, Winters, Washington, and Leroux.

the girl on the team that have impressed me most the most so far is washington, the pacy right wing who has just been flying through the defense, and leroux the tournaments top scorer.

  3. Props to ESPN for televising a bunch of these games on ESPNU – is that where the final is going to be?

Still, I don’t really need more coverage of this team. Might be unfair, but it’s how it is for me.

  5. As a Canadian, it kills me to watch the Canadian U20 women’s team struggle, especially in the attacking 3rd. To then watch a Canadian (Ms. Leroux) suit up for the American NT and leading the tourney in scoring only pours alchohol over an open wound.

Regardless, good for the US and good Leroux. Hopefully you guys take this tournament.

  6. AltiCooper, relax. The Men’s U-20 World Cup isn’t until this summer. However, I believe qualifying is in February. The men’s U-17 Cup is also this summer. Patience.

  7. Settle down AltiCooper, if you read this site regularly you would know I cover far more men’s youth national team stuff then women’s youth national team stuff. The women are in the under-20 World Cup final. It’s worth noting.

  8. I have watched all of the USA U20 WC games and some of the others as well and I must say that I was very impressed by the USA’s play vs. Germany. They have really grown as a unit throughout this tournament and 4 clean sheets out of 5 games shows this team is solid in the back. Alex Morgan has also been a revelation in addition to Sid LeRoux and Nikki Washington. Alyssa Naeher is solid in the goal and I predict she will challenge Hope Solo for the USWNT starting GK spot in the near future. Now it is time for the gals to get some payback vs the North Koreans in the final on Sunday.

Ives, thank you so much for including info on the U20 USWNT on your blog, they really deserve the attention!! Hope you will write on them some more.

Awesomeness. I’ve been following scores, but don’t watch the games. Congrats to the team, and it is extra nice to beat Germany.
