USA vs. Mexico Countdown: Who is ‘El Tri’s” biggest villain?

In any rivalry like the USA-Mexico rivalry, there will be players who are considered heroes and those who are regarded as villains. For Mexican fans, no player fills the villain role for the United Stats quite like Landon Donovan. For American fans, picking the ultimate villain is just a little bit tougher.

Think about the candidates for a second. From Oswaldo Sanchez to Jared Borgetti to Cuauhtemoc Blanco to Rafael Marquez, there are several candidates to choose from. Please note that we are not advocating hate, because in the end all players in this series have earned the respect of fans from both sides, but let's face it, if you can't hate the players from your arch-rival then who can you hate?

If you are a U.S. national team fan, now is your chance to vote. What Mexican national team player have you hated the most since you began following the series? What player symbolized the "Bad Guy' better than any other player for Mexico?

Now that you cast your vote, tell us who you voted for and why?

  1. dirty sanchez was bad, i mean really bad and i honestly believe if he was an american he would have been booted from the team for embarassing his country like that… but that was just one incident. i voted for borgetti because he’s been a total douche his entire career. he only was good playing in mexico because hes a big dude playing with a bunch of small guys who he can push around. he tried that crap in england with bolton (typical, another historically dirty team… a match made in heaven) but failed miserably. look up punk in the dictionary and you see a picture of jared borgetti. i sincerily hope that fool never plays for an mls side, and if he does (chivas looks like they’re eventually gonna get him) i will always pull against them.

marquez on the other hand is a different situation. he was frustrated during the wc and acted like an idiot, but i see him play way more for barca and in that context i have respect for him. rafa would be a good dp for the new miami team.

  2. Luis Mex, Fear not… You guys will soon be done with your GRINGO coach. If his plan to “fight fire with fire” is doused by the USA he will be sent packing and El Tri will again be on the hunt for more firewood to throw upon your nations teetering pyre of a National team

  5. Does anyone remember from about 15 years ago a Mex player kicked Lalas right in the nuts during a stoppage in play? I heard he later sent Lalas an autographed photo of the incident before their next matchup. Anyone else recall this?

  6. Hey guys another Video by curtesy of YOU TUBE I hope you enjoy it, it’s a must see video you see cheap shots from both side of Mexico vs. USA and most hits are Mexican players.

  7. Sanchez. Not even a question. Very few things in life make me happier than watching Feilhaber’s goal on Youtube and watching Sanchez throw a tantrum afterwards.

  8. The funny thing I see is that US fans hate Mexican players more than Mexican fans hate US players. They do not give a sh_t about US players, they hate the Argentinians.

  10. Any Euro snobs that disregard this rivalry, should take note that the hideous attempted tackle by Sanchez on EJ happened in a FRIENDLY!

What other rivarly could produce such dramatic exhibition match?

  11. voted for sanchez, but have to say as a fire season ticket holder blanco plays down right dirty. I love it when it works for my team, but its tough to stand up for him sometimes.

I think you are wrong here Ives. While I have every respect for many of the Mexican players, in no way can you say that about all of them.

You are right that its not about hate, but some of the stunts pulled by certain Mexican players in recent years certainly goes far beyond any reasonable definition of respect.

I think it diminishes your own credibility to implicitly excuse Sanchez and his attempt to physically injure Johnson outside of the run of play as something that we can all just laugh off.

This is just simply beyond the bounds of civilized adult behavior and, if he had connected with Johnson’s knee as he intended, he probably should have been arrested for assault. I know if a US player did something remotely similar I would want him barred from the team.

Do you really think that a guy who does something like this and then attempts to justify it deserves our respect or the respect of Mexican fans?

  13. How did Sanchez avoid getting a red card for the EJ incident? Or at least some form of punishment after the fact? I’m still trying to figure that one out all this time later.

Sanchez did actually catch the inside of EJ’s right ankle pretty solidly, but luckily EJ’s foot was off the ground and he was able to stay on his feet.

  14. There have been several classic Mex hacks, e.g. Marquez getting deservedly red-carded for a foul near the end of the US 2-0 win at the 2002 WC (if I remember correctly when that was), but Sanchez cheap shot at Eddie after the Donovan break-away goal is by far the lowest.

  15. It has to Sanches………. He just talks to much… and after the Eddie incident… he deserves to be disliked…

He just does not understand that Mexico is not that better then the Americans!!

    Go USA….

Ill be at the game Ives let me know if they are meeting up somewhere before the game!!!

  16. I voted for Sanchez. Don’t forget that he got arrested in a hotel in Chicago a while ago. When they came back stateside a few weeks ago for a friendly, he got detained at immigration for a while.

I don’t like Marquez either. When Donovan spoke of the rivalry, his response was, “Who is Donovan? Donovan doesn’t exist in the world of football.” And this was after Donovan eliminated them from the World Cup.

  17. Anybody remember the game, and the mexican player who Keller hit in the head with a flying fist when he came charging out of his box?

That was one of the greatest moments of schadenfreude I’ve ever experienced (and I’m not typically a sadist).

  18. Ives, this poll really should have an “all of the above” catagory. There’s enough hate to go around. Oswaldo stands out but that could be only be/c his actions are fresh on everyones’ minds. Just think how much we use to dislike that long-haired-diving-whining-cheater Hernandez?

  19. Recently, Sanchez gets the vote for the EJ incident, but for me Blanco and Hernandez are in a tie over the long run, with the edge going to Hernandez, El Matador pendejo.

I can’t stand it when players spit at other players.

  20. Luis Hernandez is by far the biggest P*to. Aside from Borgetti, LH was Mexicos most potent force up front. A cheap shot artist with a small mans complex.

  21. I use to have no strong feelings about the Mexican team, I got excited about the games because I knew they were the other top team in our conference. That was until I saw Oswaldo Sanchez take a cheap shot at Eddie Johnson like a little kid throwing a tantrum. It was a little rediculous, especially since (like usualy) Johnson had no part in the goal.

  22. To me is Rafa Marquez, Who can forget what he did to Coby Jones in the World Cup and other times that he has cheap shot other players from the USA. Even tho he play in one of my Favorite Team in the world “Barcelona” and he is good central defender. I can’t stop hating him from the Rivalry stand point. SO yes Rafael Marquez is my Villans. But wait there are new one coming up like Vela, Villaluz, Torrado, Osorio. and theres been lots of trash talking by Guardado, Zihan, Salcido.

  23. ahh, i voted for sanchez but the villain changes for me everytime we play ’em. used to be rafa for the cobi headbutt in WC ’02, but he’s begrudgingly showed some respect since then. Before that it was blanco (for all the reasons you love or hate him), so i’m excited to see who’s up next. 🙂

  24. Everybody talks about Sanchez’s failed attempt to trip EJ, but does anybody remember the 2002 World Cup? When Rafa Marquez blatantly threw his head into Cobi Jones. A blatant head butt when he knew they were knocked out of the WC down 2-0 to the US in the 87th minute. He had nothing to lose so he tried to take out an American. Plus all the other crap he’s pulled through the years.

  25. I’m taking Dirty Sanchez on this one. Like everyone else, the EJ incident made me sick.

Although Marquez’s deliberate head butt on Kobi was pretty bad as well.

The problem with the Mexicans is that they cannot accept defeat with dignity.

Until that happens I will never respect them.

  26. What a hard choice, so many of these guys have been cl assess on and off the field. I particularly hate how they belittle our efforts after their losses and don’t admit they are an inferior team. I voted for Sanchez but would have like to split my vote. Hernandez was a dirty player and stole his salary when he was in MLS.

Was the Jones incident where he had to be taken off the field?

Or was that someone else, possibley Reyna who was assulted and had a head injury?

  27. I have to say Sanchez with Rafael Marquez a close second. I think it was Marquez who late in the 02 World Cup, when Cobi Jones had the ball, the dude made a harsh tackle and the linesman raised the flag. Rafa walked over Cobi who was on the ground and when he stepped over looking like “who me?” he kneed Cobi in the back of the head.

Sanchez won out for his bitch moves against Eddie Johnson that other posters have talked about and his other whinings and complainings.

  28. Definitely Oswaldo “Dirty” Sanchez…that attempted take-out of Eddie Johnson was borderline criminal. Luckily, he missed, showing that his fighting skills are nearly as bad as his goalkeeping.
