Legal Trouble Looming for Montero?

Seattle Sounders star striker Fredy Montero could miss this weekend's match at Toronto FC with what was being described as the flu, but his problems could involve far worse than an illness.

According to the Seattle Post-Intellegencer, a Seattle-area woman has accused Montero of stalking her and has claimed that he is doing so after she accused him of sexual assault a week earlier. It should be noted that no charges have been filed against Montero at this time, but the story coupled with Montero's curiously-timed illness ahead of a trip to Canada suddenly makes you wonder just what is going on in Sounders land.

Montero, who was only recently named MLS player of the month for March, has helped the Sounders get off to a 2-0 start, scoring three goals and becoming a superstar in Seattle.

Now, that dream start for Montero and the Sounders could be in danger of crashing to a halt if these allegations are true.

  1. The sheriff’s office report details a second complaint the woman made, when she called on Tuesday to say she had seen Montero in a car at an intersection near her home. She told a detective she feared for her safety and believed Montero may have been looking for her house. Detectives determined, however, that Montero was in the neighborhood with his host family because the family’s son was playing in a football game at nearby Skyline High School… This Chick is full of Sh*t! Gold Digger. This was a report on Soccernet.

  2. Regardless of what is true or not, this is unfortunate.

    1. It has apparently already affected his availability for at least one game. Yeah, sure, he’s go the flu. Except I wouldn’t be surprised if Seattle wanted to avoid a possible stink of Fredy being denied admission to Canada (I don’t know that’s the case, maybe he does have the flu, but this think would look a lot worse even if Montero is totally innocent of everything) if he isn’t allowed to cross the border. Or it may have been a discrete arrangement between the Sounders and the Sheriff’s Dept.–they won’t announce any charges at this time but someone with an international passport isn’t allowed to leave the US. I hope it hasn’t come to that but you can’t ignore either possibility in this instance given the sudden onset of flu.

    2. Again, assuming he’s totally innocent of everything, Seattle doesn’t own him, he’s on loan. So an experience like this doesn’t help build a desire to want to stay in the US.

    3. Those arguing/claiming it’s a gold digger, that seems a little flawed to me–Montero isn’t making that much coin from MLS. There many more people in the Seattle area making far more money than Montero. Now that also doesn’t meant Fredy is guilty of anything. Only that the claim that this is about extorting money from him seems weak to me on it’s face.

    4. The publicity for the club isn’t good. No club needs this kind of news coverage. No, it doesn’t mean MLS has “arrived.” Montero is part of a great early story in MLS (the success and excitement of Seattle).

  4. Mimi, I hope you’re kidding with that. Of course if the guy did something wrong, then shame on him and everything, and it’ll get dealt with. But don’t wish ill on the Sounders, they’re helping take soccer to another level

  5. LOL! Also just read on Romero’s blog (Seattle Times writer, best SSFC coverage available!) that Ljungberg’s going to start in place of Montero.

    SSFC won’t miss a beat!

    Oh to

    Oh to be a

  6. I just want to point out that the March 31 thing has already been dismissed and the March 22nd thing is now almost two weeks old.

I don’t know the situation, but I doubt any new information is going to turn up for the police now that hasn’t turned up in the past.

  7. What’s the travel situation? I know the north-of-the-border-travel still a new-ish thing, but after years playing Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver in USL-1, Rochester has had to leave international players state-side due to fears of them not getting back into the U.S.

Montero has not been charged for anything at all. So stop accusing of him being guilty of something for a crime he was not charged for. In the US montero is innocent until PROVEN guilty.

It should like the family of the accuser wants money which could be a reason why they leaked out the report to the media especially when charges have not be brought.

  9. Hey Drew Carey & Seattle – Welcome to the real world. Your little soccer fantasy is coming to a crushing end. You will probably lose this weekend, go into a slump, Freddy L will break his hip & Freddy M will go to jail. You’ll be drawing 6,000 next season & losing in the rain. Emerald City, my rear.

  10. I just read the newspaper’s account. Police did nothing wrong here. All incident reports are public records, and the names of suspects are listed in the the reports. I write for a newspaper and know the names of many people accused of crimes, but we don’t print their names until they are charged officially. In the case of a celebrity, the media will oftentimes release the suspect’s name. You may not think it’s fair, but that’s just part of being famous. If you disagree with it, try to change the accepted standards of media ethics. Do you honestly want the police to stop releasing any information? I can promise you they won’t black out suspects’ names. They’ll just stop releasing any reports at all.

  11. I have read that it was the family of the accuser that leaked it out to the media Seattle PI reported cause they wanted to get people to come to the site. (and i wonder why they had to stop printed their papers cause no one is going to read their stories)

Here’s the issue montero has not been charged for any.

  12. I’m just now hearing of this story for the first time, so I don’t know all the facts. However, I seriously doubt anyone “leaked” this story. I will share a little insight about how newspapers work. Police reports are public record. Most newspapers will pick up a stack of all the police reports. It’s likely that someone came across the report involving Montero, recognized his name and went to the police/prosecutor.

I agree that we should not rush to judge. It’s funny though how a “regular” person gets accused of something like this and everyone wants to hang him. When it’s a celebrity, people are ready to hang the accuser.

If these allegations were bogus legally the accuser can be charged with falsely accusing someone of a crime. Also the team could also go after the accuser for damage of character.

  14. The cultural rules of how a man relates to a women varies widely from culture to culture. Hopefully this is all just a cultural misunderstanding. Unfortunately, I don’t think this is going to end well even if he’s found to be innocent.

  15. Northzax,

You have your chain of events wrong. She didn’t look out her window, they were both stopped at opposite sides of the same light that was “a few blocks from her home.” He was in the neighborhood to watch his host family’s son play a high school soccer game.

  16. Yeah, it’s a coincidence that they’re saying Montero has the flu…but I agree…innocent until proven guilty.

As a TFC fan…I really hope he makes the trip to Toronto. As much as I think him not being there favours TFC…I don’t want to be left knowing how much of a difference he would have made.

All of Toronto is looking forward to a great match against MLS’s newest team.

  17. JesseMT. Yep agree with you. Legally the BPD and KCSD should have never leaked out montero’s name and could get a legal case against them.

  18. Update on the “Stalking” – Actually, he was a passenger in his host family’s car attending a H.S. soccer game, which by coincidence was about six blocks from his accuser’s house. Considering there was no legal wrongdoing, Bellevue PD and King County Prosecutors were very irresponsible in leaking this information to the press. It’s the kind of thing that might result in a mistrial down the road.

The 3/22 charge is serious, but I think at this point it’d be better to stop freaking out and just wait for more facts to come in.

If Ives’ comment thread is this bad, I can’t imagine what B.S. looks like right now.

  19. I agree let the authorities deal with it and let the courts deal with it. Don’t be the lawyer judge and jury here.

  20. Dude, the stalking allegations have been proven false. He was with his host family watching their son play a soccer game. She saw him in the car with the host family and claimed he was stalking her.

Where there is one lie, there is usually others. Shame on anyone who already pronounced the man guilty.

  21. “…she saw Montero in a car near her home in Sammamish…”

Can Fredy even drive legally in the U.S., or is this a case of “assisted stalking” with a getaway driver?

It’s no wonder that charge was thrown out.
