No Javier Aguirre? No problem.

With their head coach serving a suspension, the Mexican national team used a first-half blast from Gerardo Torrado to cruise to a 2-0 victory over Guadeloupe on Sunday.

Panama joined Mexico in the Gold Cup quarterfinals courtesy of its 4-0 mauling of Nicaragua. Blas Perez and Luis Tejada provided three of the goals for the Panamanians, who will now face the United States in the quarterfinals.

Here are the Gold Cup quarterfinal match-ups:

SATURDAY (in Philadelphia)

  • Canada vs. Honduras (5pm, Telefutura)

  • USA vs. Panama (7:30pm, Fox Soccer Channel, Telefutura)

SUNDAY (in Dallas)

  • Guadeloupe vs. Costa Rica (4pm, Univision)

  • Mexico vs. Haiti (7pm, Univision)

What did you think of Mexico's performance on Sunday? Are you worried about Panama? What teams do you see getting to the semifinals?

Unfortunately, is because the US is seeded very low. When they seed they look back, i think, 4 world cup cycles. so the us needs to keep doing good to get good seeds.

  3. Why does Canada always get the worst draws in CONCACAF?

Why does the U.S. always end up in the group of death in big competitions or tournaments such as the WC , WC under 23, Olympics etc. etc?

Conspiracy? – Do I smell a whiff of that Swiss cheese like fondue cologne emanating from Seth’s Bladder?

  4. I predict Bradley will kick a Panamanian player in the nuts, or at least some Mexican fans would have you think so, since the Panamanians are apparently infuriating in their playing style, that opposing teams have no choice but to kick them in the nuts

I guess you weren’t around in 2007 when the US played Panama during the Gold Cup.

The amount of whining about the “dirty” Panamenians was unbearable.

I suspect you’ll be the first one to start crying when Blas Perez tackles Perkins for no apparent reason.

  5. i think calling in Clark and Jozy would be smart. i think Benny left for Europe, but if not, he should be in this game. hopefully Davies does not leave yet. Need him and Jozy up top.

Excuse my intervention on a non-related topic, but …

Should you really “allow” some chick to dictate whether or not you will be able to enjoy a beautiful night of soccer to its fullest?

    Just saying …

(SBI- Carolina played Panama’s reserves. I saw the game, and yes, it was ugly).

  9. Spoke to a reporter who interviewed Gooch on Friday. He”ll join AC in Atlanta but not play against America on 7/22. WILL play against Chelsea on 7/24 in Baltimore, a homecoming of sorts.

  10. I can’t wait for the match this Saturday. Sucks, the girl I’m going with won’t go if we stay for a double header, so I’m missing the incredible Canada vs Hondorus match and I’m not happy about it.

  11. are the games played in Dallas the first event played at the new Dallas Stadium? If so thats sick, even though its Mexico i hope they fill it up.

for the final: no one is talking about US-Costa Rica. would be a good time to avenge the earlier defeat. also it is great to see the US and Canada playing well that will be another great match in the second round.

so what is the schedule for implementing the A-team players? Jozy and Benny on saturday? Is Adu going to see anymore minutes?

  12. As far as Davies’ availability, I haven’t heard either, but I believe the US has “the right” to call him up for it, regardless, as a FIFA sanctioned (well, whatever the word for “meaningful, obligatory, release-your-players” is) event. I would think now that we are in the knockout stage, we might work in a few more big guns, if we have them on the 30 man roster.

  13. Honest question – why is everyone so high on Clark? He is plenty athletic, so I can see where he could be useful against these teams in the Gold Cup, but he seems to really struggle & fall short in games that are more tactically involved and dynamic. I could see him maybe making the roster for next summer but getting very little if any playing time. I think in a year from now, we have better options at that position.

Well, thats exactly why we need to give him playing time. So a club like Rennes can sweep him up and take him overseas. That way he learns to deal with tacticaly aware teams. He’s got a nice range of passing for a defensive midfielder, but he could stand to be better on the ball and not have as many giveaways.

According to the YA board on Big Soccer, he arrived in Milan over the weekend, and was scheduled to take a physical today.

Would it still make sense to only be on Spanich language TV?

  19. I’m surprised Bradley hasn’t called in Clark as quickly as he did Feilhaber after the first match. Not only could we use Clark, but Clark could really use this tournament to showcase what he can do for Rennes.

  20. Panama could be a tricky game for us, depending on who we have available. Mexico should have an easy time with Haiti. Canada and Costa Rica should advance too, but those could be close ones.

In my little U.S./Europe soccer box, I didn’t know Panama was decent.

I still see the U.S. taking the Cup. Canada has a decent chance as well.

United States 3 -0 over Panama

    Costa Rica 2-1 over Guadeloupe

Haiti 1- Mexico 1. Haiti wins on PK’s and Mexico has no head coach on August 12 when we maul them in Azteca.

  26. With the squad we have I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see Panama make it quite difficult for the home team. I think the U.S. still wins 2-1 with a late goal.
