The U-20 World Cup in Egypt officially kicked off on Thursday with the hosts convincingly defeating Trinidad and Tobago.

A first half 1-1 draw turned into a route as Egypt midfielder Hassan Hussam Arafat Abdalla's brace led the way to a 4-1 victory over the Soca Warriors in front of the 80,000-plus in attendance.

Italy and Paraguay played to a scoreless draw earlier today, but there a couple of more games on tap. Group B gets underway today with Nigeria-Venezuela (12:45pm, ESPN360) and Spain-Tahiti (3:30pm, ESPN360)

The United States opens up their U-20 World Cup playing Germany on Saturday (10am, ESPN360 and Galavision), while Cameroon takes on Korea in the other Group C match.

Are you following the U-20 World Cup? What do you think of Egypt's win? Do you see the U.S. defeating Germany tomorrow?

  1. The Nigerian stepped on a Venezuelan. Not sure if it was intentional. The Venezuelan proceeded to act as if he was being tortured. Got carried off the pitch in a stretcher. Than miraculously was fit to play 2 minutes later…

  2. I was impressed to see the opening ceremony tid bits, and the packed stadium. I couldn’t get to see as much as I wanted, being at work and having to do work, blargh, who thinks up this work stuff??

I can’t wait to get a look in HD*fingers crossed* of our young boys tomorrow morning against a world-powerhouse. I believe they will hold their own. They are much more talented than people think, and have a great coach.

  3. on FIFA.com, someone said the italy-paraguay match was a bore and that paraguay were unfortunate not to come away winners. interested to see how some of these teams do, but can’t wait for tomorrow to watch the young yanks. a little disappointed there isn’t more TV coverage of the other matches- maybe this gets better as we get to the knockout stages?

  4. If it was on actual TV, I would watch it, but I can’t watch soccer on the computer, its too frustrating. But I’ll make a point to watch the US U-20s.

  5. Been trying to watch this morning’s Italy/Paraguay match on ESPN360 from work… we don’t have it here, but I set it up to connect remotely.

ESPN is denying me access though. I’ve watched it from here before, dunno why it won’t let me now?! Ugh.

Friday’s are always slow, figured it’d be a good way to pass the time.
