There's a big college soccer matchup tonight in College Park, Md. No. 2 North Carolina visits No. 4 Maryland with huge ACC implications on the line. UNC is undefeated coming in, off to a a 4-0-1 start, trailing only Akron for the No. 1 spot in the NSCAA rankings. Tonight's match kicks off at 8pm and will be broadcast live on FSC.

No. 1 Akron will put their ranking and unbeaten 6-0-0 record on the line in their MAC opener against Bowling Green on Saturday. The Zips haven't skipped a beat despite losing Steve Zakuani, and will look to assert themselves further with a mid-week matchup against Ohio State.

One of the most surprising members of the top 10 is No. 8 Harvard. A trip to Wake Forest awaits this weekend in another top 10 match up, though Wake will be without defensive stalwart Ike Opara, who is in Egypt with the U-20 World Cup side. 1. solid win for MD, agreed, that it was a bit sloppy, but MD is very young, they lost a ton of players to the MLS last year, including the starting central defense for the Galaxy, they are talented, UNC missed a pk pretty badly, MD’s keeper was huge to keep them in the game, MD scored in the last few minutes to win 1-0

  2. Watched the Maryland/unc match. Those two teams presumably have some of the best players in the country on their rosters. The two teams are highly ranked.

So why was it so hard on the eyes. I can’t recall if i saw 4 passes strung together. The average was 2 and then boot it down field.

Was not a battle of skill. It was all physical. ANd sadly, i’m sure there was skill out there. It was just well-disguised behind running…lots of running…and kicking…and more running…

  4. Big 10 match ups deserve a mention here. Indiana’s #13 ranking should put it in the group of 16 matches that are listed, not to mention its historical strength. What are the criteria for listing here?

  5. Yesterday, California State University of Bakersfield played agiasnt Mexicos U-17.

The game ended in a 1-1 tie.No extra times just penalites and Mexico won.

Mexico dominated the game with their passing, better runs, etc.

  6. ACC is by far the best conference in the nation, past two national champions 5 of the past 8 final four teams, MD is by far the best program in the country right now 2 of the last 4 national championships, 6 of the last 8 final fours

  7. I think the University of Portland, even when they suck horribly, always deserve a mention… it just has too much special soccer character to ignore. But then again, I’m from Portland.

  8. Are Creighton vs Washington on Friday and Creighton vs Portland on Sunday (both in the Husky Fever Classic) not seen as important games?

Where do you look to formulate this list?

  9. Ay Ziggy Zoomba!!! Is this the first time Bowling Green has been mentioned on SBI? Of course, it’s just incidental since we’re playing the #1 team. (also playing the #9 team in american football this week). Let’s go Falcons!!!
