U.S. Open Cup Final set for tonight

USOpenCupLogo

Tonight's the night in Washington D.C. as the Seattle Sounders face D.C. United in the U.S. Open Cup final at RFK Stadium (7:30pm, Fox Soccer Channel).

Seattle will be severely short-handed defensively, with starting defenders Jhon Kennedy Hurtado (suspension) and Tyrone Marshall (injury) out. The Sounders still have plenty of talent, with attacking stars Freddie Ljungberg, Fredy Montero, Nate Jaqua and Steve Zakuani.

D.C. United will look to defend its Open Cup title on the strength of offensive stars Christian Gomez, Jaime Moreno and Luciano Emilio and the midfield presence of captain Ben Olsen.

Here's the simple question to all you impartial fans: Who will win tonight?

What do you think of tonight's match? See D.C. United winning another trophy? Think Seattle will come to RFK and pull the upset?

  1. What is the deal with “vamos united”? I’ve seen enough of the united supporters groups to know that they usually aint the Chivas type. Maybe someone should come up with a cheer in a language they actually understand.

  2. @Bryan- I’m with you, not all of them are like him. Just like not all Sounders Fans complain and cite attendance. That’s the problem with the internet, it gives a form to EVERYONE for their opinions. It should be a good game, and eventhough we have a long history going back to the NASL days, it’d very nice to have a cabinet full of trophies like DC

  3. I stand corrected. 12 trophies it is.

BTW. I thought the comment about Nate Jaqua being a typo in the attacking threats was clever. Jaqua is hard to watch. But Zakuani is a legit attacking option. If you’re rating him simply on goals scored, then I can see you thinking he’s a disappointment. But he creates problems for every team Sounders play. You’ll probably see DC focus on him tonight by always getting a guy to support the guy marking Zakuani. He’s the real deal (at least, he is in MLS).

  4. Man… DC fans do a lot of whining. You guys have 11 pieces of silverware, good for you. That’s actually quite an accomplishment, and outside of Seattle DC has often been one of my favorite teams. But the way you guys are threatened by the fan support we give the Sounders… it’s actually disappointing. I expected more from you guys, not a bunch of bitter, childish posts. Congrats on your titles. If you win tonight, congrats on #12.

  5. I agree w/ Nico. The fact is, United’s attendance has dropped 20% this year. I don’t understand all the railing on Sounders fans. What this league needs to survive are butts in the seats. Seattle’s doing that.

  6. Seattle fans are only obnoxious in the same sense that they are not supporting , and there are more of them. If you want your team to hold that (dubious) title maybe you ought to get more of them.

  7. Marshall and Hurtado are too important to Seattle, they can’t win with their defensive depth or lack thereof.

It is funny to see how bitter people are towards Seattle fans. They are really no different from any other team’s fans…the only difference is that there are significantly more of them (in their stadium and online). They make the same asinine comments that other fans make, they are just more noticeable since they have larger numbers. At least that is my perception.

  8. This whole thread might turn obnoxious very quickly. Aaron (a Seattle fan) stating that either team could win was really annoying to me. I mean, the naivity of Aaron to state his opinion in a clear, logical way has just pissed me right off. Doesn’t he know to stick to trivial non-sense in such internet comments.

  9. Hendrix- Zakuani is legit. He is a natural forward playing out wide, so he doesn’t get too many looks at goal. He does a great job setting up goals that we have had a tough time putting away.

  10. KBD- Take a breath and think before you write something. Winning by 6 doesn’t make your fans better, it makes your team better.

We have more fans, you have more history, bla bla bla.

I voted Sounders. We play poorly when we are supposed to win, and play awesome when we are supposed to lose.

  11. Since when did Steve Zakuani become an “attacking star”?

3 goals in 23 games doesn’t make you an attacking star. I actually think his season has been mighty disappointing, given the draft day hype.

    Sorry there’s a typo here… “Nate Jaqua”.

I’m even a Sounders fan, but his play can be annoying.

Aside from that, I think either team has a chance, esp. with the holes in the Sounders’ defense. I’m being pretty neutral now so that hopefully a) I don’t have to eat $h!# if we lose, and b) I get to throw it back at everyone rooting for DC if we win.

  13. @j_loome – How is it clear that it’s more hype? Also the away supporters section is in the northeast corner, right next to the band- of course, he never made his way to the southend where the main supporter sections are. He even gave the props of the lower bowl standing for the entire game, and said that he wished that happened in Toronto.

  14. Hah, pretty clear from Parky’s video at Seattle that it’s more hype than anything. Be ineresting to see how many travelling fans they have tonight. You’d think, for a cup final, they’d be coming in the hundreds, or even thousands.

If they’re actually committed to their club, of course.

  15. I hope for a Sounders win, but missing 3 of 4 central defensive options will sure make it interesting. Maybe we can dig deep and actually find the back of the net a few times. It’s time to show some heart and make it happen.

  16. Seattle beat New York and Colorado by scores of 3-0 which means they won two regular season game where they lead by 3 in the 2nd half. Unless you were talking about the blown DC game in which they were up by 2 in the second half… So are Seattle fans allowed to support their team yet by your standards? 😉

  17. Sorry, I’m not impartial in the least, but I still voted. Vamos United! I hope we win by 6 and shut up all the Sounders fans bitching about how much better their fans are. Yeah, you guys are wonderful. But until your team wins something (heck, even a regular season game that you lead by 3 in the second half), shut the hell up and stop acting like you invented the damn sport.
